But I rarely make an image. I guess the lesson for me here is, it's great to remember your camera, but don't forget to take your vision.

Great inspired episode, and I think the abandoned shopping cart image loosely, but quite interestingly, fits within the Vegas Noir theme.

Take care, Ted! Thanks for the inspiration.

Re: INSPIRED – Episode 44 – Short Stories Continued

Ted,

You need to follow this. We want to hear your stories with your photographs. This is a great idea! I find Ernest Hemingway to be among my favorite authors because he can set a very visual scene using words alone. Hemingway's work is completely descriptive, and, at the same time, deceptively simple. The Sun Also Rises is my favorite story of his; and, his short stories are great, too. Hemingway is very much unlike the textbook writers you mentioned in the PM95 podcast. Please consider sharing your writing. I would very much enjoy reading where the image takes its creator.

As always, love the podcasts!

Michael

Re: Why Crop to the Cinematic Aspect Ratio 2.39:1

I would LOVE a 21:9 native aspect ratio OR variable frame line equipped digital or film still camera!

Re:

Hit The Streets 147: Q&A with Doug Kaye

Soldier. Poet. Husband. Illustrator. Father. Painter. Friend.

There are so many ways to describe David Boyer. David has served his community and his country in the United States Army. He has deployed to combat zones, and has returned home to northeastern Pennsylvania to fight the other battle that many returning soldiers and service men and women must fight - the physical and emotional scars inflicted by war.

David is not negative or bitter. He embraces each new day as an opportunity to connect with people in a way that is old-fashioned, but not dated. David draws and paints and writes stirring poems; we frequently exchange handwritten correspondence through the mail. He appreciates life and the beauty around him. David eschews the constant upheaval of the daily news cycle.

David is an "old soul" with a taste and sensibility toward a vintage style and countenance. He is a throwback to a bygone era. David embodies the values of another time, but does so in a way that is more reverential than melancholic.

There are many ways to describe David Boyer, and all of them good. I am proud to call David my friend. Among all the labels that could be attributed to David, perhaps none is more fitting than this:

Creative.

submitted by: Michael J Hoffman, Delta, Pennsylvania, USA.

Re: Photography Matters Ep 80 – Fred Herzog

Ted,

I really enjoyed Episode 80; I was not previously familiar with Fred Herzog. His work is amazing!

With regard to color film selection, I think Ektachrome E100, pushed to EI 200, will get you as close as currently possible to the spirit of the Kodachrome from Herzog's heyday. However, if you are looking for mood in spades - a color noir look - then you should try CineStill 800, if and when it becomes available again. I got the attached image with a Holga 120N and CineStill 800.

Always enjoy both podcasts and your work on YouTube. The thing, specifically, about composition is that what you leave out is AT LEAST as important as what you put in.

Re: Kodak Ektachrome is Now Shipping

I am curious as to whether Foveon sensor technology would provide a "look" analogous to that of Kodachrome, because of the different layers of color spectral sensitivity inherent to both the Foveon sensor and to the Kodachrome developing process.

Re: Photography Matters Ep 18 – Portland, Oregon and Traveling with Film

Hey, Ted! Great episode as always!

Two more things about travelling with film:

1. if you know where you will be staying, you can pre-ship your film to that location and pick it up on arrival. most hotels will be happy to accommodate. call ahead to verify BEFORE shipping.

2. also, for those who shoot film prolifically on long trips, the National Geographic photographers who shot film on an extended assignment would number their film canisters as they exposed each roll. then, every week or so, they would ship the odd numbered and even numbered rolls in two separate packages. that way if one package would get lost, they would still have half of their images in roughly contiguous order.

Before I switched fully to digital I used to do the same and, thankfully, never had an issue. Great advice on the hand-check request, too!

Michael

Re: Emulsion – December 2017

I look forward to each new issue of your webzine. Great and informative video! Just curious if you are familiar with San Francisco Bay area photographer Henry Wessel? He has a body of work called "Night Walk" which is very similar to much of your nighttime photography. If you aren't familiar, check him out. The G11 should be, in every way, the pinnacle of the Canon PowerShot G series to date. I can't wait to get mine!

I think photographers who understand how digital imaging technology works, and who are interested almost exclusively in still images, will buy this camera, and will be rewarded with excellent results in the images this camera is able to produce. Those photographers who buy into marketing hype, want an all-in-one still/video package, and who want every feature under the sun, won't buy this camera. The success of the G11 will depend on if there are enough of the former to obviate the technological ignorance of the latter.

Michael J Hoffman
