I also know a number of founders and VC's, and never had, nor attended, these sort of parties or events. That said, I have zero doubt this kind of soul crushing nonsense is real. The majority of men I know and have worked with would stand for what's been described here. Saying this does not take away from, nor doubt, the experiences these and other women have had.

Re: How to Build Startup Awareness with Digital Publicity

That's a good, really substantial comment @WindyCityParrot. I've had similar experiences historically and even recently. I, too, continue to seek useful answers that go beyond theoretical (with which I'm very experienced) and deliver significant tangible results. Can be frustrating when time and clients' $$ and goodwill are on the line.

Re: Impress Your Execs With This New PR Metric: ROPRS

There's another extremely important consideration regarding the question "is this running in print or online only" Media matters. Mediums matter. Different media venues, and media channels, attract different audiences and elicit different behaviors. That's not speculation, as you know. There's data to back that up. If they're going to weigh in about marketing related stuff, however basic it is, they should understand what they're weighing in on first. I like Farhad and MikeIsaac's respective work a lot. But isn't it time for our profession to take a lead in shaping the conversation of the comms profession?

Re: The Loneliness of an Entrepreneur

Great advice and perspective. Shane's description of Howard couldn't be more on target, particularly the pregnant pauses of which he truly is a master. I too have found his pauses have always had a payoff whether in the form of a re-direct, an unanticipated insight, or a new context that greatly enriched the story and made it worthy of being called a feature. Howard will be missed but his impact on the IT industry in Canada and elsewhere will be felt indefinitely.

Re: Top HP VP sheds new light on company split

Great article, Paolo. The PR profession (+ IR, corp comms, etc) seems to be starting to wake up to the reality of what you've so clearly stated. "Adapt?" Agree, it's absolutely critical and it has to happen now - particularly given how much progress has (finally) been made towards re-defining the real value, breadth, and expertise of our profession. Interestingly, public relations is demonstrating some of the most progressive thinking and willingness to embrace the "new" that will be of greatest value to helping clients achieve their business goals. Separately, congratulations on HORN's re-branding. It makes a truly powerful statement.
Best regards,
Michael

Re: In Innovation Today, The Smartest Companies Collaborate With Enemies

Interesting article. This is a strategy that was first articulated by Adam M. Brandenburger, at that time from Harvard Business School, in his seminal book "Co-opetition," co-authored by Barry Nalebuff from Yale. (1996) I definitely recommend it for a quick read. The idea of 'co-opetition is founded upon two principles: 1) a mindset that combines competition and cooperation, and 2) Game Theory strategy. I believe Adam B is currently a professor at NYU Stern business school. He's a friend, so I'll refer him to your article. I'm sure he'll enjoy it.
