I loved reading about all the new tools and startups that were coming out. Since then I use it as a guide to what's really important in the tech/SM scene. I'll be mashing it up in Ballwin, MO, USA (St. Louis suburbs)

Re: Is Social Media Really Social?

I used to say I was a Social Media guy. Then everyone said they were social media experts so I decided to not use that term anymore. The problem is that the general public has heard the term and is curious so you kind of have to use it in conversations. It's tough to get away from.

I had the same problem discussing marketing in the past. To most people marketing is a TV ad or a brochure. Those are marketing tools, but effective marketing has a message to communicate and chooses the right channels to get it across. People wanted a website but could not tell me their competitive advantage.

I think there are degrees of socialness or at least depth of relationships. I question how social you can be using any of these tools. Most people only have a few close relationships in their lives. That's why we have 300 Facebook friends but really only talk to a few of them.

These platforms allow us to open up channels of two way communication that did not exist in the past. While we may be able to converse with scores of people, the depth of most of those relationships is shallow.

It is possible to have meaningful conversations, but difficult to pull off on such a massive scale. How deep are your relationships when you have thousands of followers on Twitter?

Re: 5 Predictions On The Future Of Marketing, PR and Advertising Agencies

Mobile will be huge, but computers will not go away. Think both/and not either/or. Technologies diverge. We still advertise on the radio for crying out loud. Marketers have to continue to add new tools to their IMC toolbox.

Re: 5 Predictions On The Future Of Marketing, PR and Advertising Agencies

A challenge I have with small business owners/entrepreneurs is that they are strapped for time. It is difficult for me to get clients to think through what their competitive advantage is, much less learning and spending time in social media.

It was the same way with email a few years ago - they would rather send ads (spam) than spend time writing useful content for potential customers.

Any recommendations on how entrepreneurs accomplish this hands on approach with limited time? I'm still trying to figure it out ;)

Thanks for the thorough post David - you did your homework on this one.

Re: Beyond the Checkin: Where Location-Based Social Networks Should Go Next

You could say these apps put the cart before the horse.

I was excited to get my N1 so I could really use these kinds of apps, but I got bored.

I like to take pictures and adding location and/or a comment to them is great. I don't know why Foursquare does not have photo uploading. Their biggest oversight IMHO.

Re: Social Truth – Ethics, Law and You

Sounds like a transparency issue. If you can garner interest and promote the event it might be worth your while, but many a lonely author has shuffled awkwardly around their table at BN.

Bulk discounts and offers are great. Offering to speak for free at an event where they make a bulk purchase is also a good.

Check out the Saint Louis Publishers' Association (http://www.stlouispublisher... for ideas and support.

Re: 10 Ways To Avoid Being A Facebook Jerk-Face

Great headline for this article, and good tips too.

I post a lot of pictures of the kids and stuff on my personal page for family and friends. I quit using Gowalla because it was inaccurate. Now FS changes the game too and I can not check in to places I am already the mayor - even my house.

I already spent (or wasted) a lot of time setting up these venues in the first place. Now I am being told to send in requests to validate them. No thanks.

Feels like I am being punished for being an early user. I think I will just quit playing and maybe check back later when you have this stuff worked out - or find someone else who does it better.

Thanks FS, it was fun while it lasted.

Re: http://blog.pegshot.com/post/477303262

I've tried everything and PegShot is the most accurate and quick loading for me. Much to my surprise the latter was much more popular.

It is easier to be negative. Also people are usually looking to learn how to be better and search for the positive when gathering information. I try to show what people are doing right now and find I get a better response.

philanthr.org

Re: Tin Can Tavern VIP

The Tin Can is a lot of fun.
