Our views happen across our distribution network and are generally not branded "blip." But I can assure you that we're doing north of ninety million views per month now. They're real views with people actually clicking "play." The average episode is thirteen and a half minutes long and our engagement is some of the highest in the industry.

Yours,

Mike Hudack
Co-founder & CEO, blip.tv

Re: The Streamy Awards: How to Unwreck the Car [OPINION]

Oneiric,

It is not at all silly to compare what you call "new media" to the early days of film. Film itself was revolutionary because it allowed one person's or one group's creative output to be shared with millions in perfect reproduction. As a consequence, however, film (and, later, broadcast) caused the centralization of power within the "entertainment industry." The means of production were centralized as capital became increasingly important to entertainment -- something that had previously been fairly democratic.

Web video maintains the power of individuals and small groups to reach millions while removing the barriers of capital and monopoly that have been established by the technologies of film and television. We have been freed of the tyranny of narrow spectrum and expensive theaters. Where film and broadcast forced creative people to genuflect before the network executive, Web video places creative people in the drivers seat. This is a fact with massive cultural and economic import.

This change is truly revolutionary in much the same way that film itself was. That said, I agree that the awards show should not be granted a reprieve for being crude (I haven't seen the AVN awards so I can't comment on your comparison).

In terms of the responsibility, I agree that the producers are responsible. I know them personally, though, and I can tell you that their intentions were good. Very good. There's no question that the production we witnessed on Sunday was incredibly poor and embarrassing. There's also no question in my mind that everyone's heart was in the right place.

Again, I'm confident that the IAWTV board of directors will resolve this situation. It's not my place to say how, but I believe that they will act appropriately.

Yours,

Mike Hudack
Co-founder & CEO, blip.tv

Re: The Streamy Awards: How to Unwreck the Car [OPINION]

You're right, at least in this comment. Regarding your comment below, I don't think that it's at all helpful to apply specific blame to specific individuals at this stage. That can come later.

In regards to ownership of the awards, I agree with you. The AMPAS and NATAS structures are appropriate. I'm confident in the ability of the IAWTV board to rectify this situation. Ultimately the IAWTV, the Streamy Awards, the community and the industry will emerge from this year's awards stronger than we were before. I'm confident of that.

Yours,

Mike Hudack
Co-founder & CEO, blip.tv

Re: The Streamy Awards: How to Unwreck the Car [OPINION]

I think that it's clear to everyone at this point that the 2010 Streamy Awards were, as you say, a misfire. I don't think that it's necessary to say more than that on the subject -- you and others have clearly conveyed the reality of this past Sunday night. I also agree with you that the format of Sunday's awards harkened back to an earlier era. They sought to emulate the Oscars rather than creating something new and uniquely ours. It's worth remembering that the first Academy Awards were themselves an innovation. The pioneers of the film industry did not copy their predecessors. There is no reason why this new generation must copy our predecessors. Hopefully we will not make this mistake again.

The format and the execution clearly need to be rethought. That said, I do think that an in-person awards format is appropriate. This community -- and, dare I say it, this industry -- needs an evening that we can call our own. We need an evening of celebration. The Internet is a wonderful thing and Web video is clearly an incredibly powerful medium, but the reality is that we all still need -- we all still crave -- personal contact with our friends and peers. An in-person event is not simply for the press. It is for all of us.

A dinner -- not actually very dissimilar from the first Oscars -- feels appropriate. An opportunity for people to socialize and talk and celebrate and recognize their peers. An opportunity for us to show who we are and how and why we are different from traditional Hollywood. For us. Not for the press, or for outside interests.

I'm confident in the ability of the International Academy of Web Television and its board of directors to deal with this situation and put on an excellent event in 2011. I am confident that lessons have been learned, that the format will change, and that the board of the IAWTV will take the necessary steps to assure that this happens. Ultimately the 2010 Streamies will be remembered as a turning point for Web video. A very positive turning point.

Yours,

Mike Hudack
Co-founder & CEO, blip.tv

Re: Building a rising tide

Yeah, that makes sense.

We're still a bit away from people being able to sign up for the program.
