The regular column split is a 5- (or perhaps 10-) column system, but “Inside NY Times” and the footer sitemap are in a 6- (or 12-) column layout.

If the grid for the whole site is based on a 10-column logic, then you can divide a row into 1, 2 or 5 equal columns to make up the full width. But you can't build a row containing six equally-matched columns. 6 doesn't divide into 10 equally. That's when you'll need a row with a different total column count. (In this example, 6x1 = 6 or 6x2 = 12.)

Re: Designing Grids | Zell Liew

Important to note is that by compiling your own grid rules using pre-built CSS or by using the framework's Sass files, you can set grid gutters according to your needs *per breakpoint*. Also, there's no reason why you can't define a different column total per page section: 5 in the header, 12 in the main body and 3 in the footer.

Re: REM: Not the Band

Because that will fix the font size, thereby stopping visitors who have larger or smaller text sizing preferences in their browsers from seeing the text as they need to.

Re: Einwurf Das Handgepäck-Wirrwarr ufert aus

Käme diese Einschränkung, würden Passagiere, die 2-3 Tage in ein Nachbarland aufhalten möchten, mit viel höheren Flugkosten rechnen. The “average consumer” has also been familiar with it since Google Street View launched nearly a decade ago.

Re: PX, EM or REM Media Queries? | Zell Liew's blog about web design and development

I can see your point. But the difficulty there is that 30em in the main content (text set at the equivalent of 20px) may not equal 30em on the HTML element (text set at the equivalent of 16px). So the main content container's width of 30em (600px) is different from the HTML width/media query of 30em (480px). Media queries relate to the HTML element, not to the individual content container width.

Re: PX, EM or REM Media Queries? | Zell Liew's blog about web design and development

From a parallel discussion: if breakpoints are set in ems and a user changes the preferences in the browser to use extra-large text, then the layout will probably switch into the tablet or mobile layout. Which is probably fine.

Re: PX, EM or REM Media Queries? | Zell Liew's blog about web design and development

If I adjust the page layout into columns when the screen is big enough to handle it, then the deciding factor is the screen width, not the font size or the width of the content.

Re: PX, EM or REM Media Queries? | Zell Liew's blog about web design and development

Your understanding of the difference between REM and EM is correct. However: media queries used in this way are most commonly (albeit not always) in place to respond to the viewport size, not to the visitor's browser font sizing choices. That's an important distinction to make.

If you're using media queries to respond to the screen size - i.e. the device or browser window width - then that value is fixed in pixels. If a visitor with an iPhone 6 uses the browser with a text size of 200%, then the device width breakpoint is still 375px. Setting the breakpoint to 23.4375em, where the base text size is 32px instead of 16px, the same breakpoint will now be 750px - double the width of the screen.

So, in short: if your media queries relate to the screen size, I'd advocate the continued use of pixel units, not ems.

Re: How vertical-align Works

Very clear and very helpful!
