I have a plastic file folder that I set up in the beginning of the year. I file my receipts for work expenses, charitable donations, and other deductables throughout the year, so that when next year's tax season rolls around, I already have everything I need in one place. I also create a folder in my email inbox labeled "Taxes 2014" where I can drop email receipts for online donations. Low-maintenance and simple!

I put myself through 2 degrees in my 20s. Between student loan payments, part-time income, and school expenses, credit cards were my lifeline. I realized I had a problem when I started thinking of the available balance on my credit cards like the balance in my checking account. I just paid off all of my credit card debt last month, and I'm really, REALLY excited about going on a cash diet. Most credit cards are getting the scissor, and I'll save one for emergencies. Even though I'm still working on my $100K+ student loan debt, I suddenly feel hopeful about my financial future. Here's to new beginnings!

I've started a new job with an income boost. I resolve for 2014 to be the year that I FINALLY stop living paycheck-to-paycheck. That means emergency AND rainy-day savings, a solid Student Loan Debt Eradication plan, and working towards paying off my credit cards (so I can shred them!)

Does your vacation destination have a rainy season? Consider booking then. I saved hundreds of dollars going to Costa Rica during the "rainy" summer months. It only rained for a short spell every afternoon - Not only did I save $$, I still got to enjoy all of the sights without having to deal with the crowds. Win-win-win!

Preventative health care is surely more cost-effective in terms of health outcomes and health costs. The problem is that, in the current US system, many health care professionals can't afford to/refuse to go into primary care/public health (unless they're insane like me) because they're so overburdened with student loans from medical school/nursing school/advanced degree programs. (The cost of which, as you stated, keep rising in part because people can get loans for those programs.)

So to answer your question, if health insurance coverage disappeared and there was suddenly no more government-subsidized care, it would be a disaster. Perhaps some drug companies would reduce the cost of their medications to capture markets of scale. But our system is based on tertiary care, which is expensive and inefficient. Without the infrastructure and personnel in place to deliver good primary care, we'd see a drastic increase in rates of infectious diseases (primary care = VACCINES) AND a reduction in early detection rates for chronic diseases.

Maybe when rich people started dying of Tuberculosis and people started rioting at WalMart Pharmacies, someone would get the message that public health is vital to our nation's health and security?

Just speaking from my own anecdotal experience.

I'm not sure about girls who give that nickname to guys. I just call everyone "dude." Probably has something to do with the fact that most of them see me as one of the dudes.

Mike, I've only tried Masala potato chips once.

It was an incredibly disturbing experience.

Although not as disturbing as the "Mexican Bean and Cheese Enchilada" I had tonight. The beans were there, but the "tortilla" was actually a roti, the enchilada sauce was actually masala sauce.... and the "cheese." Oh god. It was American cheese.

I guess I should be glad it wasn't paneer.

Once I photoshopped fake lip tattoos onto a picture of me and a friend. We had half of the internets convinced that we actually got the words "playa" and "hatah" tattooed on our lips. It was pretty hilarious.

DUDES. I really, REALLY wanted to spend my birthday in SF, I assure you.

Especially considering that last year's birthday spent in your beautiful city was one of the best in my life.

I even tried to book tickets a few weeks ago, but thanks to FUCKING EASTER, they cost approximately ONE MILLION DOLLARS more than usual.

So, alas, no Bay Area Birthday Funtimes for me.

I may try and visit in about a month, after graduation though! I'll keep you posted!
