true -- guest contributions have been archived in the sidebar thingy. There was this weird 24-hour period where OPB had suggested they wanted to interview me about the blog on the radio, and I had a lot of inner turmoil about the fact that i hadn't posted in months and that the most recent posts weren't my own writing and didn't really reflect what the project was about, and so i decided to bump the guest contributions to a pseudo-semi-archive without actually deleting them. But then OPB had a scheduling conflict and it didn't end up happening, so, here we are, me being selfish and alone, as usual.

Totally on your side. This is ridiculous. Pitchfork seems to have handled it gracefully, though Tumblr's handled it very badly. Have you corresponded with Tumblr staff since the above email?

don't understand this argument. possible misuse of the phrase "uncanny valley" (as i understand it, the closer the resemblance, the more disturbing the effect?). counterexamples too obvious and plentiful: by your logic, this morning's washington post is more valuable/truer than the odyssey? is this an argument for nonfiction over fiction? is there a place for allegory? are we discarding storytelling whose bases are "not real" or "not believable"?

ps, to address the point, how about majestically mediocre? Spectacularly mediocre? An inspiration of mediocrity? Mediocrity pursued monomaniacally by a director of greater vision, resources, and true talent for the mediocre than the world had ever known?

Even better! Thanks crucially for reminding me of Borat. And yes, of course the list needs definition. At the time I was just pulling out the movies that struck me from lists of all the oscar nominees this decade. But I've got the list defined now. It's not going to be of movies per se: it's going to be the top 5 (or 6 or 7 if I think of more) *concepts* in movies this decade. #5, for example, is "male androgyny." Johnny Depp in Pirates, Heath Ledger in Batman, Cate Blanchett in I'm Not There, and so on.
