Though there is some difference of opinion (vide Marc Stiegler's _Earthweb_ for not only an entertaining read, but also in passing a view of a  very libertarian future that has the notion of private police forces), the libertarian notion of government I most often read of is a minimal government that protects against fraud and initiation of force--not anarchy.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;That said, as many have pointed out, incumbents in the US have such an advantage that  their re-election likelihood rivalled that of members of the Supreme Soviet, and election laws are such as to make it nearly impossible for "third parties" to gain a foothold.
