We would love to see the museum on our visit in March 2013-I sure the city or whoever is responsible has cleaned up the public washroom there-just so bad, rust everywhere and so unclean!!!

Having a wonderful holiday 4th visit to Amelia Isl from Canada and went exploring at American Beach yesterday-wonderful and interesting history but what is with the public bathrooms there-dirt-rust-discussting-please tear down or fix up these are not safe according to public standards

I agree with what you have said here, another good place to look at real time comments is trip advisor where people stay at your island hotels and rented properties. We stay at the Marriott Residence Inn which by the way gets the best ratings I have ever seen and I do a lot of reviews for things and I am on the web about such things all the time. There are lots of families staying on Amelia and they have kids who need things to keep them entertained while us mid level seniors are just happy with a walk on the beachJ
The mini golf is great but again needs some repairs those kinds of things are important for the businesses to keep up the physical appearance of what they do offer, maybe even though there is an ocean as you had mentioned in your article a water park would be fun for children, but again a program for kids using Egan’s Way through the hotels with a naturalist would be great, there seems to be real traffic in that area and rental bikes at each hotel would be perfect, Residence Inn has them. Even it is it not turtle season so to speak a program could be built around that and better use of the Fort area is a natural thing to involve the area is great but most times not very busy. One of the main problems of Amelia is that no one has ever heard of the Island, a few maybe the plantation but getting the word out in general would help. Free stories from well know tourism publications would help and at no cost to your chamber of commerce. Canadians love Florida try marketing to them, many own property down there and would love to see your Island. A few days on your Island might be enough for most but the real money maker is getting them to come back year after yr. Lots of shells on your beach what about a shell museum? And how to find shells etc, other places in the state have things like that. A real quality restaurant on the beach would be fantastic, and no not Sandy Bottoms! And I know Sliders has re-built but hey take advantage of that great view. Maybe one huge, program filled, hands on, informative Eco Station and combo Museum with the right experts that would be a quality draw including sleepovers for kids on the beach with park rangers people and parents a real experience that some hotels do but this would be ongoing and again THE WORD has to get out-doesn’t matter what you have if no one knows who or where you are.

Please be careful what you add as there is a reason people flock to your lovely Island and it is for the beauty and wonderful nature you have. That is where you can capitalize on bringing people to your site. Develop a world class attraction based on your unique bird population, unusual plants, turtles, etc that live there. Environmental attractions are HUGE. Continue to capitalize on your lovely historic town it is very rare to see that many historical buildings, maybe your town museum could be re-done and grown. We loved the tour of Old Town and it seemed to be very very popular, it was done for a special centennial you were having but maybe could be done at a special time every yr. If I want Disney and Orlando attractions I know where to go and that is exactly why we visit Amelia every spring from Canada. Just look around you everything people love is right there-just develop it to the fullest and leave 'tacky' off the Island:)

You didn't mention some personal facts like where he is from...Bieber was born in Stratford, Ontario, and was raised by his single mother, Pattie Mallette.
He was 12 years old when he entered a local singing competition in Stratford, placing second.
He taught himself how to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet.

Go for it, great idea and what do tourists do on a rainy day on Amelia Island, they go to where the shopping and inside entertainment is, I'm sure you could build in a great location and make it fit in with your surroundings. Good luck:)

We have lots of traffic circles at home here in Alberta but I have never seen drivers like you have in Florida, roundabouts or not PLEASE USE YOUR SIGNAL when going into the traffic circle it lets people behind you know which part of the circle you will be exiting to and also just in general, cutting people off driving and not using signals at all to change lanes, driving was a bit CRAZY!!

It's interesting that you should write this article as we just returned home to Alberta after staying on your Isl for 11 nights (our second time first in 2008 at the Ritz)

There may be an exception to the rule right in your own backyard, just came back from our stay for 11 nights at the new Residence Inn in town and loved it as most of the reviews show on Trip Advisor.
However with their facebook page I have left my comments as have others and they do respond to everyone's comments. The person in charge of that page contacted me several times before our trip as I had lots of questions and was very helpful and my comments are there for all to see.
I am not returning right away so I will not know if the suggestions I made will be acted upon but I hope that maybe they will use some of them, there was also the standard card in the room and I did fill that out as well.
The Marriott chain seems to be proactive in this regard, upon a side trip to KSC we stayed at a Fairfield Inn overnight before heading back up Isl and they had a survey for me to fill out on-line when I got home. When I didn't fill it our right away they sent it again and there was space to make additional comments.
Hopefully more sites will adopt this type of user comment page as is available on Facebook. I below to many business Facebook pages and people state their feelings very openly positive and negative and the marketing people do respond, if they don't they are in even worse trouble.

You need to get the word out to Canadians about your wonderful Island, we will be there for 2 wks this Friday and it will be our 2nd visit, most people have never heard of Amelia Island, need to have your tourism people try to get the word out about how wonderful your Amelia Island is and with the Canadian dollar almost at par this would be a great time to advertise:)

I think it will be a great benefit to have this new tourism group to help promote the US in general, can't believe you are the only country who does not. Of course individual states promote themselves but a good commercial can do wonders for people trying to decide on where to travel to. Our commercials for the Olympic games here in Canada were just great and when you can evoke an emotion in people you'd be surprised to see how it helps you to make up your minds...good luck and hopefully tourism will grow

This comment is not totally related to the story above. However I watched your President's address from afar and was very impressed. He gave specifics of how the gov. would try to create opportunties for people to save on taxes for daycare, education, and small business. He said he and his party had made mistakes, he also said he didn't create this mess. He reached out to others and said bring me your ideas and lets work together. GOOD FOR HIM.
However the Republican rebuttle was something I could have written, even though I am not a Republican or an American, the same bashing of the other guy, no specifics and the usual political jargons.
Obama must feel like he takes 2 steps forward and 20 back each day trying to change something that is unchangeable, I hope he succeeds he must feel somedays so very all alone.
I like what one of your citizens wrote into CNN after the speech. He said that most Americans didn't live or don't remember the great depression, he said it took many years for jobs to return to the country and jobs were the last thing that happened after people lost everything.
We all live in a McDonald's world, we expect that all good things will be just a drive through order away, instant gratification and we are not used to waiting for anything.
The President also said he can't create jobs it is the private sector that can only do that, I truly believe things will get better for everyone and I am glad that the media does try to show stats that prove that some small things are improving, after all there is more than enough doom and gloom to go around these days.
THINGS WILL GET BETTER let this be our mantra every morning...we will just have to learn how to be patient all over again.

I find it interesting that the people of Massachusetts supported Mr Kennedy all those yrs knowing full well that he wanted a health care policy simmilar to the one your President is purposing, Mr Kennedy supported your president. Now people who have been duped into to thinking this new policy will hurt them it seems to me to be very sad. What have you got to loose in making these changes, if some things don't work you can always revisit and change and fix till they all make sense but to do nothing and be afraid to move forward is complexing to people outside your country. It is too bad you can't all step back and look at how others view your health care situation, it is sad so many Americans have no care, and to deny them this chance to finally do something positive is also very sad.

Ban all parking on your beaches and use this to attract tourists who find the current practice of parking on beaches backward and contrary to environmental practices. You should be trying to entice people to visit your island not turn them away because on one hand you promote the turtle and wildlife population then on the other allow cars to park on your beaches, mixed messages???

Frankly I don't understand why anyone or any area would want people driving their cars onto the beaches this has always mistified me??? If for only reasons such as enviornmental why would you want a car with it's exhaust and dripping oil etc drive onto your pristine beaches. In southern Ontario at Point Pelee Island and beaches people are taken into the area by small train cars, cars are not allowed anywhere near the beach areas http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-...
I know it is a tourist attraction in Datona Beach to be able to drive and park on the beaches but to outsiders it is just an old silly outdated activity that just doesn not fit in with the thinking in 2010! To try to tie this to surfing or other activites that is just a way to make your point but really makes no sense, driving cars onto to beaches where adults and children are sitting and playing is crazy, leave your cars on the roads or parking areas and walk, we can all use the exercise.
