Oh man, you're going to love the IPA at Social Kitchen & Brewery when they finally get open! I snuck a taste (shhh don't tell the government) last week and it's delicious. I concur about the extreme hoppiness trend, and the new IPA is really unique and cool.

The 'bucks serves a vital purpose for office slaves in generic central business districts, travelers to uncultured lands (ever tried to find soymilk in the Virginia Beach airport?) and was one of the first large scale businesses to mainstream a non-dairy option. I'm not too good for them.

wow, the yelp reviews of Spud are pretty bad, both in SF and Seattle.

I did the groupon, so I'm interested to see how it goes. Looks like a lot of people have had issues with groceries billed but not received, and random charges (like deposits on the cold insulation bags.) Also I find it odd that nobody I know uses this service, considering I know a bunch of people who do Farm Fresh to You, Safeway dot com, etc. We shall see.

This is one of my favorite sour beers! It's not as aggressive as the Russian River ones, but a little more body than Duchesse of Burgundy.

Karikter is a cute shop; I went in there a few years ago and noticed their Tintin proliferation. But they're not billing themselves as the "Tintin Museum," and they're actually less cheesy than the Belgian same.

I agree that it is totally ridiculous to be making meaty food for an organization like Food Not Bombs whose mission statement clearly states they are ideologically dedicated to food equality through vegetarianism.

However, I don't agree with criticizing MSF on the basis of not donating "enough" to charity. As much as we like to glamorize the restaurant industry, food service margins are basically nothing after the costs of labor, rent, permits, taxes & doing business in SF, and food inputs. It's because of the high cost of these inputs that most restaurants aren't profitable and fail, and most people in the industry (celebrity chefs excluded) aren't making much more than people who work at actual charities/nonprofits.

The SF Vegan Bakesale, as a "podunk operation" doesn't have any *overhead* - it's all donated. So the contributions aren't really analogous. The amounts donated might seem small in the abstract, but I bet they're generous compared with the profit margin. (Also Vegansaurus got the inside skinny on the Vegan Mission Burger profit margins, which were actually negative, so the common sense argument doesn't really apply, since common sense would call for not losing money.)

That said, MSF relies heavily on the "for charity" image, but doesn't really function with the procedures and transparencies of a non-profit org, which I think is one of Laura (the nonprofit soldier)'s criticisms. If you're functioning as a restaurant or catering company, that's a different thing than a "charity." (Like, maybe as a charity MSF could get part of their inputs donated, lowering the cost?)
