The 50% figure seems a bit high, but anyways what is the median income in NZ? At $60,000 you would be $30,000 in tax but you would still have your $10,000 grant, giving you an effective tax rate of 30%. That doesn't seem so bad to me.

I like CBVs but the deep inheritance chain does not need to exist. A little bit of composition could go a long way.

A base view class implementing a typical response lifecycle could look like:

https://bitbucket.org/tabo/... I use it in almost every project. It has several strategies for storing trees inside a database depending on your insertion and read patterns.

This sucks, all the mobile OS's I like are basically dead ends: webOS, essentially dead, MeeGo, dead, QNX, doa, WP7, both Silverlight's and Windows CE's days are numbered but at least MS will probably soldier on with WP8.

Let me rephrase what I said as, they are taking free over-the-air tv and making it premium content online.

I also subscribe to Hulu+ but if they drive away their free base there will be less viewers of shows and less content producers willing to put their shows online.

Fox is now requiring that you have a cable/satellite subscription to watch free over-the-air tv. I am guessing these show will still have ads in them.

This is why I won't buy a Windows phone yet. Windows CE is a dead end, and the future of Silverlight is murky at best. It is best to just wait for this to all shake out.

If all the internals are the same, HP could remove the CPU underclock with a software update. Of course the Pre was underclocked also and they never bumped it up. Probably cause the chip weren't verified at the higher speed, but that won't stop Homebrew.

I didn't know. Which tablet is it on? I have it on my phone already, I just didn't know it was out on a tablet yet.

Edit: I searched a little on Google and found Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Xoom both don't have Netflix, so my original point still stands: HP may land some big tablet apps before Android does, like Netflix.

I think a lot of people are buying into an ecosystem, but Apple is the only one who has one. Android isn't exactly overflowing with tablet apps and HP may be able to land some big players like Netflix before Android does.

Taxes in America are taxed at the rate where the customer is located. Each county can have a different sales tax and there are currently over 3,100 counties in the US.

The Use tax is specifically for out of state purchases. You total up these purchases and pay the correct sales tax on them at the end of the year. Almost no one does this, which is why state want Amazon to collect the sales tax.

Amazon pays all of its taxes, it is Amazon's customers not paying the tax. States want Amazon to collect the sales tax for them instead of relying on customers paying a use tax.

There is a Splashtop app for WebOS phones already, hopefully it will be out for tablets when the TouchPad launches.

Americans already pay a large amount of gas tax through our income taxes. A large portion of our taxes goes towards stabilizing the Middle East and giving subsidies to oil companies. I would rather stop paying my taxes towards those things and see an increased gas tax that more accurately shows its true cost.

Toyota has been refining the gasoline engine in the Prius for years. GM just repurposed an existing engine. I would be surprised if gasoline engine efficiency was that far apart in another year or two.

Amazon has the right idea. Launch a digital locker service where each user uploads their own music files. I am pretty sure Amazon is savvy enough not to store the exact same file twice on the back-end but there is still a lot of file variation for the same song. This is completely legal. If music labels want to get a piece they basically need to let Amazon stream songs after the user has verified ownership in some way. This will dramatically cut the storage requirements for Amazon and they can pass a bit of that saved money to the music labels.

I think there are three primary approaches to caching rather that two; along with application and database caching, there is full-page caching. I find it much easier to work on the ends, full-page and database caching, and to put off application caching as long as possible. A lot more work has been done making Varnish and PostgreSQL caches fast and correct than most programmers will put into their app's cache.
