The fiddleheads came up late this year, but they are just about unfurled now. We were at Keystone a week ago and they were just coming up. People at the mushroom club were going back and forth about it (they had thin non-shaggy stems which were leading people away from pholiata) and finally the expert leading the walk decided on yellow laughing gym, but he really wasn't sure.
I will post the recipe for the chili soon, hopefully later today if I get a chance.
Thanks, too, about the input about the ringless honeys...we found them after the hike so had no one to ask.
The paw paws are on Mission Street, between the Eleanor steps and Sterling street.
Thanks so much for your comments!
~ Melissa

Re: Hot-To-Trot “Chicken” Wings (vegetarian/vegan and gluten-free)

Yes, I was surprised to find such a young chicken mushroom this late as well. I am definitely using less this year...it was super sweet, almost too sweet. I almost bet you could cut the sugar in half...though I haven't recipes which use less. I'll report back...if you try it let us know how it turns out for you as well!
~ Melissa

Re: Burdock

Hi Marge,
What kind of juicer? Some juice greens better than others. Burdock root and japanese knotweed stalks juice great in most juicers, I mix them both with juiced apples (and for the burdock I also add lemon and ginger.) Wild fruits like crabapples, apples, etc juice well, though you may want to cut the seeds out first because they contain trace amounts of cyanide (or is it arsenic? it's the same as commercial apples, pears, cherries.)
It'll be nice to hear if anyone else has other ideas!
~ Melissa

Re: Happy New Year: Reishi Give-Away

Thanks so much! You'll find the recipe (with lots of pictures) in a May, 2011 post about making dandelion wine. There is a link to it in this post as well. (Let me know if you still can't find it and I'll send it directly.) My husband did just get me a tool for digging roots...It's long and thin but I don't know what it is called. This works really well. I've seen people use a knife, too, to get deeper into the ground. Even a little hand shovel works pretty well as long as the ground isn't too hard. It's been raining a lot here so they are still fairly easy to dig. Have fun! Thanks so much for your comment!

Re: Upcoming Events

Yes!
