The posters are pretty, but do nothing for these new brands. Zooming in on icons that have no existing recognition renders them meaningless patterns.

The way the “O” and the knot are drawn is far too perky and would have benefitted from a) a heavier bottom on the “O” to reflect how trash bags behave in real life and b) from more tension in the knot.

Agreed. Combined with the green, I thought it was a fruit of some sort.

The mismatched angle cuts bother me, so took a quick pass at making the e cuts match the angle of the V. That made the g cuts seem even more odd, so I matched those, too. Not sure it's better, but it doesn't grate on my eyes as badly. https://uploads.disquscdn.c...

The illustrations are lovely and the full wordmark is great, but the monogram feels like it's listing to the left.

When Saveur ended its print magazine, the publisher started sending me Magnolia Magazine as a replacement. I've never seen a more vapid magazine in my life. There was little to differentiate articles from advertorials from ads, and much of the content was so info-free and blandly aspirational-inspirational that it felt more like flipping through a catalog.

This rebrand is similar — it's blandly aspirational, designed as if the point is to fade into the background.

It's hard to believe the old logo and wordmark only date to 2002 — it looks much, much older to me. The new version is fine, I guess. I almost wonder if they kept it similar to the old so that brand equity isn't lost among all the franchises that don't bother to update for a few years. It feels like an intermediate step before a major rebrand.
