Thanks Jonas. We'd definitely like to see Fiesta live on in some form. Open-source would be one option, but would definitely be a fair bit of work. We'll have to wait a bit and see what makes the most sense.

I definitely don't think email was a mistake. In all honesty if there was anything I was uncomfortable with it was taking email (decentralized, open) and making it centralized. The right (as in correct, and as in just) model for future communication networks is to move them in the direction of more decentralized and more open (with more privacy for participants).

I think by making the service centralized we managed to make it really easy to use and innovated in several other ways, so it wasn't a completely bad design decision. But I do honestly believe that the truly revolutionary communication network will be the one that affords the individual more privacy and more control (in an age when everything seems to be running the other direction).

Open sourcing is something we'd consider if it seemed like there was adequate interest. It definitely takes a lot of work though, so we'll need to think about whether it's the right call for us.

Sorry to the pull the rug out from under you Jonathan. Not sure if I did a great job of expressing this in the post but the reason for the shutdown really isn't money. It's the cost of time devoted to the project.
