They always have at least a few photobooks, if you cannot read Japanese just walk around the store until you find the shelf with everything sticking out at weird lengths - that's the art book section, and they'll be \around there. Each branch is different, but everything is pretty cheap, and sometimes you'll find some really good stuff. I think Masafumi Sanai's "Ikiteru" for 1000 yen (about $12) is my best find so far. Also plenty of funny cat books and the like.

Re: Deconstructing Men’s Wearhouse’s “The ones wearing the suits” commercial

Respect George Zimmer for trying at least. I imagine every good statement is only written after the work is completed! What I was thinking about here is the example of someone taking a bunch of pictures, and then retroactively trying to say that they're the result of such-and-such concept. I think you can have a statement without a concept.

Re: http://tumbledore.biz/post/8604342849

i clearly need to step up my devo game.

Re: Letter from Tokyo #4: Shinjuku Amateurs

I think there's some of both. On the one hand, you'll probably pick the gallery for your show based on the people you already know. Maybe you're already close with the gallery's crew, or maybe you get introduced through someone. Still, I don't think that there's so much schmoozing to be done - galleries need to pay the rent too, and at a certain point they'll take pretty much anyone. There is some bar to getting this kind of show, but it's not too high.

Re: From the Inbox – Nathan Ward

a good caption can really throw a photograph into relief, huh? it's much more rewarding to read these compact sentences than a blanket statement of, "i'm interested in exploring the relationship between nature and technology..."

Re: Amy Touchette – The Insiders

yes, definitely reminds me of hiroh kikai, and her statement has a similar ring to it - a real interest in people. i get a sense that the people here all feel very relaxed, maybe not necessarily with being photographed, but that before they got stopped they were just in the flow of their regular day.

Re: OpEd: Are The Kids Still Alright?

oh yeah, definitely, i didn't mean to be, like, taking you to task.

Re: OpEd: Are The Kids Still Alright?

i mean this in a neutral tone, but it's interesting that coley's partner in growing up goes unnamed - it's patrick tsai, who was (i would venture) the king of flickr circa 2007. he represents another path, one that has its own pitfalls...

Re: http://caille.tumblr.com/post/1270961546

hey, i'm a friend of danish's, just started following you on reader a little while ago. could you send me a quick email please? i have a pedantic comment (his name is Shinya) but i'm interested to hear how you saw him, talk about japanese photography etc. dan at mcvmcv dot net thanks!

Re: http://perpetua.tumblr.com/post/627152195

Your condescending tone aside, it seems like your position on this post is: "I don't like it because it's bad (because I said so)." You used all caps, trailing-off punctuation ("I guess Blogspot is now the internet equivalent of sitting at an old typewriter?") and generally wrote without any sense of reason.

You've given a reading of his post, but I don't think it really has much to do with what he wrote. Basically, I think it's a poor reading. Does he actually hate post-collegiate writing? I doubt it. What's this about excluding women from discourse on the internet? I'm not sure what you're talking about.

In any case, this post I encountered might be worth looking at here: http://www.pitchforkreviews...

Re: 25 LPs 2000-2009

found this just on a search in my dashboard. right there with you on real new fall lp, let it bloom and brightblack - played all of those albums within the past three days. love broadcast too, although i would pick tender buttons.

anyway, ive been enjoying your music posts a lot, thanks.

Re: fool’s gold

really strong work and a well written evocation. keep up the quality posts

Re: http://fuckyeahthefall.tumblr.com/post/396510814

fuck yes peel session version. couldnt believe this when i first heard it

Re: Tumblr Stole My Domain At The Behest of A Corporation

d00d that gucci mane track you posted the other day is awesome. i've been logging in to play it over and over the past few days. byeee

Re: http://jessicapetunia.tumblr.com/post/359088884

so hard to keep track of these things. first off, thats great to hear you're enjoying photo school. if you feel like it's been worth it then no one can tell you otherwise! using the darkroom is pretty exciting huh? i rented a darkroom a couple of times here, but it was very expensive (approximately $10US an hour), which made it less fun, because i need time to get used to printing again, but it's not cool to be sitting there wanting to make mistakes but also feeling rushed because its so costly...

anyway tokyo is basically great, for photography at very least, it's totally where i want to be right now. i can't say when i'm going to leave, i feel like i'm getting an education of some kind by being here, i am lucky to be able to talk to so many interesting people. as a city, it's very difficult in a number of ways - extremely expensive, crowded and busy, pretty much everything san francisco is not, but that's what i wanted. maybe the hardest thing is that there's no concept of "hanging out" - if you want to see someone you better get in touch with them a couple weeks in advance! (this is not always and absolutely true, but it's close) tokyo is BIG, so it can actually be a challenge to see your friends if they're far away! everyone is so busy. but, you know, that's stuff that i'm willing to deal with for right now in exchange for all the other great things the city has to offer - not just photography, but great food, interesting people, a globally oriented street culture...

Re: http://tumbledore.tumblr.com/post/367201178

s0 judicious
