GirlSmiles is by far the best example thus far, though moving into gaming could really break out.

Also reference: http://www.playballoonacy.com/

I'd also put Glue loosely in this category -- different approach, but still: http://getglue.com/

Re: Excess Government Spending: Defined

Yeah, that person didn't give me any way to cite them -- because they put it in an email that, while appreciated, is not handy for citation or social conversation.

Re: Oscars 2009 Photo Hunt

Good to see YouTube is allowing annotations in their distributed player now... and, yes, if TV were like this I might not need TiVo.

Re: Matt Griswold [dot] com

Only 30 minutes to relive a youth full of 8-bit bliss? Thank you.

It's only taken me so long to reply because there's so much meat in there it's worthy of a further post -- which I intend to get to once I'm back to a regular schedule. I'll do the best I can here.

I definitely think this ties to the nature/nurture debate - which is one of my favorites by the way, because it's an eternal spectrum of gray. To crime: it's greater in large cities but that's on a gross basis... and I'm not sure it ties to population in any way, except that more people drive the numbers (this is one I am hungry for more research on so if you find any please send my way and I'll post it!). To that same point, media (in your case news media) is a big driver not just of our perceptions of crime, but also of ourselves and our environment. I'm curious to see stats plotting media consumption vis-a-vis self perception.

To your point about socialized services, we differ primarily in our answer to common "big city problems". To be complacent with paying taxes to cover the bill is to suggest that the government is suited to the task... I've seen very little that has convinced me that government, no matter how well funded, is either efficient or effective with addressing these matters. The solution is not more funding for government, but more incentives for people to address the issue in their communities -- and added taxes are incentive for nothing but tax avoidance (which is only available to the "rich").

Again, thanks for the awesome remarks -- and I'll do my best to keep things coming your way for more comments.

Re: Soap Creative USA

Thanks for the kind words, Ash -- definitely thrilled to get things off the ground in such a fashion.

Re: The United States of Mind

Yes, it's a convoluted question without a definitive answer -- and I'm not sure if I should be offended or honored by being declared "THE MAN" (it's been a hard week, so I'm taking it as a compliment - thank you).

To get personal for a moment: life in Los Angeles has definitely influenced me to some degree. The views of lifelong friends that remained in suburbia becomes more foreign by the day -- not that I don't understand, and even agree with, their views; but my place has influenced my perspective.

I have most frequently chosen to hold onto my firm beliefs ("go capitalism!"), even if that means standing alone (it often does) -- but I still feel at home here because I share many other values with the community. So we give and take; and the question remains unanswered.

Re: Inflatable Sex Frog Costume

Wait, that's MY tv!!!

Re: Subtlety and Advertising Don’t Mix

Haha, I do love the 30 Rock endorsements -- though I don't remember them any more than the commercials that interrupt my enjoyment of the show.

Re: Matt Griswold [dot] com

It's not exactly a hot button issue currently -- but I did find a brief mention in the WSJ that 2004 Presidential hopeful Howard Dean was outwardly "Pro-Metric": http://tinyurl.com/439ocd

Re: Matt Griswold [dot] com

Ahh, the old "we planned it that way" response...
