Hi Marshall and thank you for this good review. I am rather curious to know more about the issues you have encountered when testing Swarmteams as my experience (which is definitely biased) has been quite positive until now. I even use Swarm-it! to send a daily notification to my virtual newsroom spread between Italy, Argentina and Japan with extreme ease of use and split-second performance.

To me Swarteams is very easy to use and outside of issues I may have not been able to be exposed to, very effective.

Marshall, I bow to Ross ability to finally pull this off, but I think your very formal and Socialtext-driven review fails to note how long it took Socialtext to enable changes it should have adopted morew than a year ago, and how other much less famous but faster and probably more agile companies have beaten Socialtext to this without the four experience.

Being Techcrunch an acute observer of which companies and ideas may be best opportunity for good investment it strikes me as unusual that you guys didn't even notice (in this article) the competition and new ideas Socialtext will have to confront itself with, while closing the article with a very lame:
"Other companies won’t stand still and the current state of ghastly wiki UIs can’t possibly last, but SocialText has been laying down open source roots for four years that will be hard for competitors to unearth.".

Look around yourself Techcrunch, Socialtext is not the only game in town and this review smells too as a kind present to Ross, but not at all as a well informed piece about where Socialtext really stands in terms of being able to listen and react to users needs in a fast and effective way.

Dashboard, tagging, and UI that gives users a comfortable place to work inside a wiki are not Socialtext firsts. That should have been noted as otherwise investors and users would be tricked into thinking that here is where the best wiki-related innovation is taking place.

But I really don't think this is the case and I gently invite you to look beyond the informative PR communications from Socialtext.

Morale.: bravo to Socialtext, but Techcrunch must maintain its ability to see beyond PR and marketing hype and have a vision that is greater and deeper
than any of its individually reviewed companies.

That's at least what I used to value you for.

To be fair, it appears as you may have inadvertently (or not?) left out even some of your own (Techcrunch) previously reviewed mobile group messaging tools that have recently launched.

Swarm-it! www.swarm-it.com, in fact does all that Zemble does and more, allowing you much finer and granular control on who gets the message and what he/she can do with it.

Further, and valuable for those readers that look at the business side of things, is the fact that Swarm-it.com bigger brother Swarm-Pro is a great tool for interactive mobile marketing to any-size audience and a perfect two-way communication channel for events and conference participants.

Thanks for reporting about Zemble, but I felt relevant, providing a more comprehensive and full reference to all relevant competitors a must.

(Disclosure: I have worked in the design of the Swarm-it UI and consulted extensively on its feature-set development)

Everyone is focusing on PR loss. But unless you are selling text links somewhere or watching some stupid blog ranking chart, PR decrease does not mean death by Google by any means.

As some of you have well understood Google has just limited the amount of PageRank these sites can pass on to other sites, whether these others are paying or not.

I have lost 3 points of PR but I see not even a slight change in traffic nor in revenue from AdSense. Maybe I should wait before arriving at such conclusions but what I see is:

Google is not penalizing sites by lowering their search position inside SERPS. It is only lowering their PR so that they can pass on less juice if they ever wanted to.

Cutting down interlinking inside small and large blog networks is something we need to add to the new list of items that make Google sneeze, while stopping being so paranoid about our position inside the charts.

Andy, I can see your point and I appreciate you being frank about it.

I am also on many charts and you can imagine that the same drop you have gotten as a consequence of yesterday PR drop has also hit my own visibility and traffic from those sources too.

I understand you saying that your sustainability does not depend on Google's traffic but openly complaining about the negative impact resulting from the loss of PR.

Is this because you do consulting work and people look at your PageRank before considering to hire you, or simply because the lesser exposure on those charts takes away more customers from your potential pool of clients?

hai perfettamente ragione. Non posso che concordare con te.

Ma questo è avvenuto per una tutta serie di motivi, dei quali sono io il maggior responsabile in prima persona.

Commenti non facili da inserire o da trovare.
Bug o altri fastidi nel compilare e sottomettere i commenti.
Momenti nei quali ho dovuto chiudere i commenti per troppo spam.
Articoli che non si prestano sempre ad ulteriori commenti perché molto approfonditi.
Scarsa prontezza da parte mia nel rispondere e controbattere ai contributi.

Inoltre penso che non tutti i lettori di Master New Media amino commentare. Moltissimi sono novizi, non sono molto tecnici e più spesso che no sono persone che non amano mettersi in vista.

Quindi i motivi secondo me eccoli lì.

Ora tocca a me ed al nuovo team di Master New Media che ho iniziato a costruire ultimamente a cambiare tutte queste variabili in modo che il dialogo sia realmente aperto.

Il nuovo sistema di commenti è in piedi. Non mi convince del tutto, ma è un grosso passo avanti rispetto a prima.

Io sono più presente e reattivo e Giulio non è da meno.

Dacci un pochino di tempo e vedrai che anche le altre variabili cominceranno a muoversi.

But again: are you OK with your readers comments sitting on someone's else
server?

Are you OK with your readers comments being all Javascripyted and being not
indexed by major search engines?

Are you OK with Disqus havign all your comments on its server and letting
only there your readers' comments to be indexed?

These are the critical points on which I would like to hear your opinion.

thanks a million for spotting this. I do test and try out most of these
myself, but you really got me on this one.
I am sincerely sorry about this, will remove this tool from the list and
will make sure that I or Nico will not add any tool unless we have fully
tested it against these negative risks.
