I just spoke on a similar topic urging business leaders in Cincinnati to hire and develop unreasonable young professionals. (You Tube: http://bit.ly/hHbpN1) We need more people and organizations stoking the passions of unreasonable people instead of squelching their fire for fear of change.

Re: Overcoming Gen-Y Bias

There is certainly a lack of messaging on how Gen Y shares the responsibility of adaptation in our evolving workplace, but I don’t think this is the right message.

I think many Gen Y workers would offer that having "unspoken rules of business" is a part of the disconnect. Each new worker needs to learn the norms of their organization, Gen Y included, but those norms should be a clear component of a transparent culture.

I also think the advice to "only express your opinion when asked" is stifling to innovation, creativity, and progress. I think Gen Y and all knowledge workers should be encourage to offer their opinions and ideas with a willingness to take the lead on implementing them.

There is great advice in this post, but I would tell most Gen Y employees to choose carefully on what advice they act upon.
