I don't think there's ever been a brand that would prefer 100 fans and 100 engaged people over 100,000 fans and 90 engaged people!

Re: The Economic Hitmen – How it is done

Amen.

Re: http://rachelhills.tumblr.com/post/10256402924

Awesome cover! Some people might find that scary, but to be honest, I'm really looking forward to mapping my life this way, I'm guessing it'll happen with a smartphone-like device that also processes transactions. I wrote a piece last year about the emotional attachment to transactions (http://www.mattgranfield.co... which you commented on somewhere or other, I really can't wait to see that actually mapped out, you know?

Re: This bird had flown

Ah sorry, didn't realise the comment had already been posted

Re: This bird had flown

Don't tell me you're writing fiction, my friend?

Re: http://www.davidgillespie.com/post/7206075600

You're in New York!!!

Re: The myth of the City of Angels

I'd be lying if I said this wasn't some of the best writing about a city I've ever read.

Re: http://www.davidgillespie.com/post/3837716823

You didn't talk about his voice.

Re: http://rachelhills.tumblr.com/post/2963726350

Love the chart! I work for free for two reasons:

- Because it's about something I passionately believe in, in which case I want the widest audience possible and I don't mind not getting paid.
- Because it's good self-promotion with a tangible benefit (eg. I work in marketing so I sometimes write pieces for Marketing Magazine as an expert, which will lead to more business, but as soon as they want me write something which isn't self-promo, it's wallet out)

That aside, I don't think you can start out with high goals of writing for a grand masthead without slaving away for those little indie publications you talk of.

Re: The sorrows and joys of being a misfit

I really like this Rachel, but I'd take the argument further. Bullying breeds empathy, but it also creates a unique sense of cultural perspective which forces victims to rebel against the perception of normal.

I think the closer a person’s experiences lay to the cultural centre of gravity, the harder it is for them to make good art.

Re: http://www.davidgillespie.com/post/2380272690

Gorgeous shot!

Re: Diamonds aren’t forever: the marriage question

I'd never thought about not getting married as a protest against those who aren't legally able to. Maybe someone should organise a giant 'un-wedding', where straight couples who want to get married invite everyone along but then don't tie the knot in protest :)

Re: R U OK? Would you have used social media at all?

Re: R U OK? I'm not!

Jonathan, I was one of the people who joked about RUOK day - I actually had no idea who was behind it and thought it was just some random meme. If I'd bothered to investigate further I could have found out, but since there's a new meme every other day I had no compelling reason to want to know more. You're right when you say that token gestures like a DM on Twitter to ask if someone is OK aren't the right way to go about seriously enacting change or really 'reaching out' to someone, but this campaign wasn't about that. Read the tips for starting an 'R U OK' conversation on the official website (http://www.ruokday.com.au/content/how-to-start-a-ruok-conversation.aspx) and you'll see there's no mention of Twitter, or Facebook. It's all about spending time with someone:

"Put the invitation out there: "I've got time to talk". Maintain eye contact and sit in a relaxed position - positive body language will help you both feel more comfortable. Often just spending time with the person lets them know you care and can help you understand what they're going through..."

The video by Hugh Jackman wasn't talking about social media either. I don't think you can chastise the campaign because they chose to use Twitter as one awareness channel. I agree with the points you made, but I think you've missed others.

All that aside, even though I didn't know who was behind the meme I still got in touch with a couple of people I thought might be struggling, asked if they were OK and made a time to catch up with them next time I'm in their city. I probably would have done that anyway, but RUOK Day was a nice reminder.

Matt

Re: CHAT ROULETTE : New Social Media Marketing Landscape for Brands?

I'm with you - I think ChatRoulette makes brands cool by association, the effectiveness is dubious though.
