I think I've suffered from the opposite problem to what you describe in that I sometimes have used blogging to express things that I wouldn't shout to the world in real life. This is because for me the internet is not as "real". There's a balance to be struck here and the crowded train effect is a good analogy. I think we need to be more deliberate about what we say in public and to use a graduation of closed-ness as well by using sites which can post to a group of trusted friends and then private one-on-one communication. (bearing in mind that people can cut and paste what you say just as in real life people can gossip)

Re: Engage Brain Before Opening Mouth

That's an interesting point you make about the flat structure of new media still being affected by real hierarchies. It seems the be the unsolved sticking point of it with many stories of how something said online to a perceived audience of peers was picked up by someone with power such as a boss, parent or school teacher.

Re: Jesus Crucified in the Movies

Stigmata http://www.imdb.com/title/t... has scene where the protagonist receives the Stigmata. One of the things I enjoyed about that film was how it deconstructs romance as the protagonist revisits old relationships to try and figure out what went wrong for him. There are two fairly unromantic turning points in the film, one where the protagonist's ex realises that while their relationship is not great, she needs him because he is familiar, the other when the protagonist finds himself attracted to another woman and realises that infatuation is an illusion based on never having seen the ordinariness of the other person.

Re: Tribal Church Ministering to the Missing Generation

Nice writeup, I can relate on a number of points mentioned there. Church seems to get more and more complex as time goes by - perhaps it is because of our culture of individualism and consumer choice. A friend of mine was lamenting about churches that still "wear the robes" while I was talking about how much I value a worship space that connects with tradition but how I have difficulty managing children in that environment. It seems like everyone has a different idea of what church is and no-one is particularly happy with what they've got!

Re: Catch The Frak Up

I'm still watching season 3 you motherfrakers!

Re: Awesome Sprinkles with Awesome Sauce

Really good show except for the half hour in the middle where you went round and round and fucking round on Australia and then couldn't stop and came back after the break and kept going on it! For such an alleged shit film you sure spent a long time trying to define the exact essence of the shit. Having said that, I prefer you get the shows out un-edited: "a show on the pod is worth two in the cloud". BTW, your show is the only movie and tv related podcast I listen to so don't worry about just blatantly repeating what all the other blogs and podcasts are saying.

Re: Pagan Christianity Reviewed

Good review and I liked how you have a 'critiquing the critique' section. It seems like we've had a few big movements over the centuries that have tried to get back to how it was at the beginning, notably the reformation and some of the reforms of Vatican II despite the obvious fact that year-zero culture is gone forever and won't be coming back. I like the idea of critiquing current Christian practices but without the need to sweepingly discard all the rich history and culture that has gone before us.

Re: Snow

White Christmas !?

Re: This Site is Gonna Look Wonky for a bit…

Just came over from google reader to find out what you're on about... Matrix III was like watching someone play Galaga. Close Encounters felt real - maybe because it was paced slower and they were able to show people actually relating to each other through gestures and proximity as well as the overheard tech speak.

Re: Greetings

Who would have thought that being a dad could be fun and rewarding? It is confusing to have a 'friend finder' function which implies it just finds other people already using the app and then mix that with an option to mail all your friends who aren't using the app. Even though the text box says it is sending invites, you are not expecting to go down this path if you clicked 'find my friends' (I haven't seen diigo specifically so I'm talking hypothetically about similar social networking sites that mix friend finder with friend inviter which seems to be the case on diigo)

Re: The Dark Knight

ok

Re: Rubik’s Cube 25 Years and Still Going

I like it

Re: We Love Village Roadshow (Give Me Dark Knight Tickets!)

bah, that was supposed to be "let's do it [guitar solo]" but the angle brackets were my undoing.
