I know SEO people have to read the tea leaves and go over anything Matt Cutts ever said, but this is kind of nuts to make a post about.

I worked with Matt Cutts in 2002 on a Google/Creative Commons project (I was the designer at Creative Commons when it launched and for three years after). I got to know him a bit then, I was still working with MetaFilter as a side-gig. We say hi to each other at technical (not SEO-related) conferences every couple years. That's what Cutts means by it is always nice to talk to you.

When all this stuff happened, I emailed him to ask for more details, and like I said already on Twitter it was very vague. We never discussed specifics, he never said anything about what I should do, nor did he ever say "that's a good idea" if I suggested a change on my part. It was a few vague emails.

I didn't get special treatment, I tried to point out publicly in my Medium post that perhaps my site was unfairly docked, and based on Cutts' comments at that SEO conference it sounds like my site and a few dozen others might have also been hit by something that might vaguely improve someday.

So I think you're reading too much into Matt Cutts being someone I say hi to at random occasional conferences outside of this industry.

Re: Google’s Matt Cutts: MetaFilter Hit By An Algorithm But Not Panda Or Penguin

Yeah. I am guessing Matt Cutts acknowledged they talked to me, and you extrapolated that out to them giving me advice/working with me. All he did was investigate what went down, looked at my past traffic patterns (which I published on my Medium post). No advice. No special treatment for me and not others.

Re: Google’s Matt Cutts: MetaFilter Hit By An Algorithm But Not Panda Or Penguin

"MetaFilter is getting advice from Google on what changes they need to make to reverse course"

This is flat out false. I've had some email back and forths with Matt Cutts, but it was talking about what happened in November. I've gotten no direct advice in the past few weeks, nothing about changes I need to make so the entire last paragraph of this post rings false to me. I don't know what Matt Cutts told you when you were writing this post, but we basically swapped email a few times that was more along the lines of Cutts investigating what happened and trying to get details about the site in the past. I've gotten no advice, and if by "working with them" you mean some discussion then that's all it has been.

Re: 2014 Texas Cyclocross State Championships

Is this the same park east of Austin that I went to in 2010 for a January race?
http://www.flickr.com/photo...

The trees look super similar, and there was a volleyball court used as a sandpit, but I don't see any lake shots or water crossings.

Re: Matt’s Signal Cross

Here's a cached version of it on my server: http://mefi.us/mattsignal.html

Re: Matt’s Signal Cross

(the tires weren't mounted and glued yet, we just stretched them on for a minute for photos)

Re: Matt’s Signal Cross

Great shots John! I made no money working for early startups in the 2000s, I come from a non-profit background, so all my investment was sweat equity in MetaFilter, which is why it took six years to really make a profit, because I had nothing and started from nothing.

I do struggle with the idea that I only have five employees instead of many, but that's the nature of web businesses, most everything else is automated.

Re: Independent Fabrications

I'm spec'ing out my first disc cross bike, so I'm curious what people are building up for wheelsets these days. Is this bike built around a 135 hub in the rear? Are those White Industries disc hubs or something else? (they look like something else, plus they are centerlock, which I haven't seen much of in options these days)

Re: Gift Ideas. It's quick to set them up in the tripod mount, the locking clasp never fails, and the pads on shoulders are a nice touch.

Re: http://yournewfavorite.com/post/5204616673

I love this: http://ilovebenbrown.com/po...

Re: MLS Gravity Bike

The only thing this awesome bike needs is some really deep rims, like Zipp 80mm 1080s.

Re: http://yournewfavorite.com/post/4167999441

Hopefully they grow some vines below so they're less unsightly as they turn into nicer green arbors.

Re: http://useum.tumblr.com/post/3994328099

Thanks for the summary, glad you liked the talk!

Re: Folk Engineered Commuter

Looks awesome and super clean. Watch gallery mates chuckle lightly, smile at their partner, then subconsciously close their jackets and zip them up in a futile attempt to stop the voice nagging inside them, the deep seated uncomfortableness that seeps into the viewer. There may be discussions after the show, words will be said and misunderstandings become the norm. It's not for everyone.

Re: mad traditions

Thanks for the well wishes.
