It's likely that he was a good kid that made a hideous mistake. He must bear the burden of being the one behind the wheel - drunk and driving recklessly, that resulted in the death and injury of his friends - forever. (The passengers had all been "partying." It makes me wonder: Though not to the extent of the driver who'd been entrusted with their safety, but do they share in some culpability?) My interpretation from the news is that the driver is being held accountable for his actions . . . with options available to minors under the law - regardless of alleged priviledged lifestyle. I also wonder if the parents of the teens share in the accountability by not enforcing curfews especially for under-aged drivers. Had they kept tabs on the whereabouts of their kids that night and into the morning hours? The circumstances surrounding Alex's death are tragic on a far-reaching scale. His father's grief-stricken words "My soul's been shattered . . ." will stay with so many of us for a long time. I am haunted by Alex's violent death on asphalt and pray every day for his family. Some things you can't recover from. This qualifies.

Re: RanchoSantaFeRecord.com | TPHS student killed in crash, another critically injured

The lives affected by this tragedy is so far reaching: siblings, parents, other family members, friends, acquaintances, even the hosts of the party the boys had attended that evening. Lives have been irreversably altered and lives have been stricken with unrecoverable grief. A life is gone and another will forever bear the burden of guilt that in itself will be a life sentence. And one more critically injured boy holds an uncertain future. The town of RSF is in mourning. As a mother of a 17-year old acquainted with the victims, my heart aches for the families of the deceased boy and the injured boy, as well as for the family of the boy who'd been behind the wheel and their inevitable struggles ahead.
