I also believe that its a major misconception that it "doesn't hurt to learn a new language every year."I believe it does. For every year spent learning a new language, it's one less year you could have spent working to become an expert in one (10,000 hour rule). Imagine if jason fried or DHH stopped programming with RoR just to play with another language.

Young programmers, find a great programming language and master it. Move on only if the language stops meeting your needs, or if the business requirements call for it (ie mobile). Anything else is probably a distraction.

Just my $.02

Re: Learning Ruby: Expert Advice for Absolute Beginners

PHP is a far superior language. If this current site, both content and design, is any indication of things to come, then I'm quite frankly worried. Digital is one of the most important pieces of Ebony's brand, and quite frankly I don't see the capital investment I believe it deserves.

Re: Ebony’s Website Re-Launch puts Magazine over Digital

I'm not sure if the a paywall is relevant to this particular discussion. But sense you bring it up. The problem with a lot of black media is that they are working with the same premise as you, they're assuming that somehow that the content on the web page somehow will decrease the amount of the print subscribers... I don't agree. A great example of a company successfully managing both a print magazine and an online website is Mansueto Ventures LLC, owner of Inc and Fast Company. Their websites consist of some of the same articles you will find in their print edition with absolutely no paywall. Why do they do this? Because they've realized that the website is reaching people whom they would not normally get through print, and vice-versa.

Re: Ebony’s Website Re-Launch puts Magazine over Digital

Agreed. We've seen the editor selected list done time and time again, at the end of the day it leaves you saying, "Look at all of Alfred's buddy's on his "top" 100 list." Instead of a biased editorial staff choosing their favorites, we used a metric. We can debate the metric all day (kinda what Lynne and I were doing if you read our threads), but I think this method leans more towards what the crowds/re-tweeters think are interesting and less on the "good ole boy method". Sure the results aren't what we all envision, but it is what it is, and we decided not to screw around with the results.

Also, I appreciated the advice on the differences in how you run BE and we run BWM, at the end of the day the metrics will decide this too.

Re: The 100 Most Powerful Black Men on Twitter

1) I don't disagree with you. My point was, what other metric would you use to judge influence/power/or whatever? In the same vein, if you have 1 million followers but don't say anything worth being re-tweeted then you don't have influence. So if followers isn't the right metric and until we can make better sense of the fire-hose of tweets (working on this too) then I think re-tweets is a pretty decent judge of influence considering what we have to work with.
2) Who's to say that using a nomination/voting process wouldn't lead to a popularity contest? Not to mention coordinating a fair and impartial voting system is not simple task (remember I've worked on the black weblog awards for a few years). The point is, there's no true way to build a list like this without a people ruffling some feathers. We chose what we thought was the most impartial system at the time. Please keep in mind that the purpose of this was to start a discussion and judge responses. The response is clear, but this is only the beginning of the conversation. We will refine and improve as we go forward.

Re: The 100 Most Powerful Black Men on Twitter

Lynne if you could suggest something other than Klout and TwitterGrader to grade power, influence, or whatever, we're open. But when judging a person's influence on Twitter, what better method than to use the amount a person gets re-tweeted? If i have a million users and never get re-tweeted, and you have 8000 and you get re-tweeted often then you're more influential right?

Re: The 100 Most Powerful Black Men on Twitter

With a list like this, there are bound to be some over sites. The Twitter pool is so vast that making sure that every person of color was counted can be a daunting task. Obviously we missed some, but as we continue to create these list (hopefully at min. yearly), our goal is to improve on what I call our" seed list". We are also working on segmenting this list into categories (though I doubt we can do 100 in each category).

This was our first go round, though not perfect, it will get better.

Re: The 100 Most Powerful Black Men on Twitter

Not sure why people are upset with the list, numbers don't lie.
