I used to live in Beijing. I made a little video while I was there, which was a little nerve wracking : https://www.youtube.com/wat...

And I had a very similar experience being detained by police for shooting video with a GoPro you can read here : http://blog.niffgurd.com/20...

Re: The Sinocism China Newsletter 08.05.13

Super scary video. I saw a semi truck driving the WRONG way down the freeway (on the shoulder) on a road trip to DaTong once.

Re: Beijing Snow

Here is a few photos I took of the snow : http://www.flickr.com/photo... maybe next time we can meet up.

Re: /Filmcast Ep. 213 – The Top 10 Films of 2012

I listened to your podcast while driving today, good stuff. 2 things that came to mind. None of you mentioned the last 3 seconds of The Grey at the very very end of the movie AFTER the credits. Did you guys see it?

And your discussion of The Imposter documentary reminded me of the Thin Blue Line, looking forward to checking it out.

Re: The Sinocism China Newsletter For 10.27.12

Have you read Tombstone?

Re: The Sinocism China Newsletter For 09.11.12

I watched the Phoenix TV building get built, I was bummed to not see it finished before we left. Looking forward to catching it on a swing back through Beijing in Dec.

Re: Why People in Cities Walk Fast - Jobs & Economy - The Atlantic Cities

Living in Beijing I have yet to see the quick walking thing here. People I feel walk slow. Granted they will walk and make forward progress on any road or intersection without any attention to traffic lights, laws, rules or cars.

Re: http://garrettgrove.tumblr.com/post/7360155708

Well said.

Re: Hello!

Interesting write up Jon. Even more interesting that there is some social network thing going on here as well.... I'd like to hear more about that as well.

I had similar desires myself : to get in better shape.

I started out slowly by buying a mountain bike in California and the first time I rode I dry heaved over the handle bar. I then started riding more regularly, and then hiking more regularly. (Never went to the gym). Since moving up to PNW 5 years ago, I've started hiking even more and over the last 3 years have started keeping track of miles per year. This has worked out to a daily goal that I have tracked on a daily and weekly basis and that regular measurement is what has really helped me stay on course.

To sum up and restate :

Set a year goal that has a daily aspect to it and then regularly make progress and measure.

With that in mind I started this :

http://www.milesperyear.com

Which got as far as registering a domain and writing up first level requirements and data model but hasn't got much further. (Cool logo though eh?)

In the mean time I am continuing to keep track via Google Spreadsheets :

http://www.milesperyear.com...

Cheers
mbg
