Taking clothes from stores and homes -- especially in populated areas -- isn't worth the huge risk that taking food and medicine is. (And it's burdensome to carry.) But you are right in that there's no reason for women exclusively to be responsible for that particular task. The characters even joked about it: "I'm starting to question the division of labor here."

But I agree on all your other points. I don't know whether the writers simply didn't know that Plan B doesn't abort pregnancies -- which would be unacceptably ignorant on their part -- or whether they were trying to demonstrate that *Lori* didn't know, which could be the case given the backasswards nature of what passes for sex ed in the American South. Of course, if it were the latter, then I don't know why someone else didn't correct Lori on it.

Overall, I loved the first season of the show -- especially the pilot episode -- and it's been disappointing after that.

Re: What Did Discussing The Walking Dead TV Series Online Teach Me About White Privilege?

That's a really good question. I've seen some good results in science fiction shows, as well as in David Simon's work (_The Wire_ and _Treme_).

Re: What Did Discussing The Walking Dead TV Series Online Teach Me About White Privilege?

Thanks for taking the time to write this more nuanced response.

Personally, I didn't get the impression that DeVega was caricaturing white viewers (or white writers). This was just his (her?) opinion based on his/her experiences and body of scholarship (whatever you may think of it).

Just so you know, I happen to disagree with DeVega's analysis of Glenn -- I don't see Glenn as a stereotypical "Hop Sing" character at all -- but I'm not willing to out-of-hand dismiss all of DeVega's opinions and analyses of race in the context of TWD. I agree with DeVega with regard to the discomfort of finding that there can only be one black male character at a time -- and this is set in the American South, no less!

Further, in this article, DeVega is outlining the dismissive and often disrespectful responses that s/he received in his/her other essays.

I don't think it's clear at all that Andrea and Michonne had a lesbian relationship. This show is pretty blatant, so if they had, it would have been mentioned, referred to, or shown -- so I'm sticking to my original belief that there are no LGBT characters in the show.

I'm not saying that there has to be an LGBT character, but these days, most other big-name shows do feature at least one. One would think that within a random assembly of a huge cast of characters, an LGBT person would show up at some point. (I guess there's the doctor who performs experiments on walkers in the Governor's basement lab -- but he's not really out per se, and he's certainly not shown in a relationship.)

Anyway, I'm not sure why you're so riled up about DeVega's essays. Why does this bother you so much?

Re: What Did Discussing The Walking Dead TV Series Online Teach Me About White Privilege?

Chip on your shoulder much?

Re: What Did Discussing The Walking Dead TV Series Online Teach Me About White Privilege?

That's nice, dear.

Re: What Did Discussing The Walking Dead TV Series Online Teach Me About White Privilege?

Many of these comments are proving DeVega's points.

If it's any consolation to you, Mx. DeVega, I feel the same way about the treatment of women on this show. And not a single LGBT character? Really? The closest we got was that creepy prison inmate assuming that Carol was a lesbian because she had short hair. Wow.

There's so much that I enjoy about this show -- but its treatment of women and minorities (or its erasing of them entirely) is very disappointing.
