The problem is that they view their business as building and selling cars, rather than solving transportation problems with top-of-class design and manufacturing.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;People still need to get around.  Someone needs to solve that problem now that we're shying away from cars, especially fossil fuel cars.  But the problem is there and it's waiting for someone to tackle it and make a fortune in the process.  I can't think of any company better suited to take this challenge on than the big 3.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So to answer your question of who needs reinventing, it's the automotive industry.  Hybrid cars aren't enough; they're merely stop gap measures.
