I know people who work their way through community college and public universities with no debt. But I agree German universities could be a very good idea. I wonder how hard it is to get in. Are there entrance exams? Another thing to remember is that you only have input to where or if your kids go to university. At that point it is their life. They have a mind of their own and they will decide. Of course teaching them other languages will give them many more choices:-)

Re: 9 Reasons You’re Hitting Language Learning Walls (& How to Break Through Them to Finally Become Fluent)

I agree with Stéphane. This is the best guest post ever on Fi3M. My question is. What if your brick wall is that you only understand 50% to 60% of what you hear? Last time we were there we agreed that 3 days wasn't nearly enough. It reminded me of Paris but I've never been to Madrid. Where did you stay and would you recommend it? Also did the street food ever make you sick?
Thanks, Marion

Re: 20 ways to stay safe and prevent theft while travelling

Great post Benny! I'm an American and my husband and i love to travel
in Mexico. Universally when I mention this to Americans they say "But
what about the danger? My response is always - Oakland is more dangerous
that Mexico!

My daughter was walking from Bart to her house in Oakland about a year ago talking to me on her phone at 2 in the afternoon. Suddenly I heard a scream and the phone went dead. Someone
knocked her down and took the phone - Lesson learned - don't walk and
talk on your phone. Not only are you an easy target but you are also not
paying attention to what is going on around you. The police didn't have
someone available to take a report that time until 2am 12 hours later! They are too busy with violent crime in Oakland to worry about property crime.

A few months later our car was parked overnight on the street near her
house in a pretty good area of Oakland. We had taken everything out of
the car inside just to be safe but had overlooked the cell phone charger which was running from the plug to the console. Our window was smashed in but there was nothing to steal. Lesson learned don't leave a charger in plain sight in your car.

Re: The Resistance is Coming!

Count me in!
My Duolingo user name is marionvermazen

I'm learning Spanish

I live in Reno, Nevada

I'd love to go to Sevilla, Spain!

Re: 33 Weeks

I love the pic! The author of http://timegoesby.net a site about aging just moved and I find I am interested in how the move is going. And to be an online 'friend' it doesn't even require you to know who I am. Weird! I have always believed that a real voice is important to a blog and I guess this is an example of why realness is important. I empathize with you and hope everything works out.
Take care,
Marion

Re: Thoughts on the Second Career

I can't tell you haw wonderful it is to no longer be living in a megalopolis You won't miss Silicon Valley.

Re: Opinion: Doctors and their offices are stuck in the 20th century

Laurel, I so completely agree. I used to be against HMOs but after experiencing Kaiser in the SF Bay Area I can understand why they cost less. Everything is electronic, you never have to fill out paper forms, Lab orders go directly to the lab not through you on paper. Perscriptions go directly to the pharmacy and of course they are non profit. I sure wish Kaiser was available in Reno.
Marion

Re: Why I Love Vegas

I'm with you it is a fascinating town.
