Trying to get an immigrant visa for V to the States was a bit frustrating. I think I was misinformed the first 2 times I went to file the petition and the next 3 times I emailed them, but no hard feelings, as it worked out OK in the end.

I hope Seba's magical influence works on all of you future visas ;)

Re: Se Llamaba Machasa

Cuuuute!! If I were looking for a dog, I'd take him, but I'm not, sorry. I've decided that I hope my future neighbors have a cute dog to play with and take for walks, and then drop off at home afterwards. hahaha.

Re: Baby Kay, Family Session: Fotografia Santiago Chile

cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuute!!

Re: Christmas and New Year’s In Chile

hehehhehe. oh you make me feel so much more normal. I seriously don't know what we will do when we have children, because I soooo don't want to decorate a tree, or anything for that matter. I suppose we'll mooch off of grandma's christmas spirit, hehehe. Or maybe we'll just come to Chile every year because it's not nearly as crazy here as in the states!!!! V and my christmas gift to each other was not to get each other xmas gifts ;)

Re: Running a Small Business in Chile

Nice post. Hope your health continues to improve ;) Love the photo of the wet sidewalk.

I saw New Moon too. Personally I was quite disappointed when the werewolf friend cut his hair. He was sooo much more gorgeous with long hair. New Moon writers should take a clue from the Last of the Mohicans and keep the long hair. So Sexy. But even with short locks, the werewolf's much sexier than Bella's vampire. I haven't read the books, but I imagine in book 3, Bella becomes a vampire and then starts flirting with her mortal enemy, the werewolf. That's the most logical right?
Anyhoo, enjoy your trip. Hope you get better soon.
Saludos

Re: Love, Loss and What I Wore, Part II

Entertaining post. One of the first questions a few of my Chilean friends asked me when we met was "Are American weddings really like in the movies?" To which I responded, "How's that?" And they clarified: "You know with all the girls in the same dress?" I'd just gotten back from my brother's wedding in the States, and I showed them the photos which confirmed their horror. hahahha. They found the bridesmaids dresses terrible. Everyone in the same a-line dress. hahahaha.

I think the idea of inviting EVERYONE to the weddings here is starting to become out-of-fashion, especially since the majority of the weddings I've been to here were funded by the bride and groom, not their parents. In one, the novios even left some family they barely ever saw off the list, which resulted in hard feelings, but they said, "we're paying for this, we want to invite who we want to invite. y punto." The parents really have no say if they are not footing the bill, or at least part of the bill.

The last weddding we went to was really fun. The novio's family was bueno para el hueveo!!! They even had a 30-minute karaoke session where the novios sang a couple karaoke songs as did several of the guests. It was hilarious!

Re: Belonging

Yeah, you've kind of nailed the key to making friends anywhere I think. It's best to be in a situation where you are with the same people repeatedly. I ended up making friends with people in my capoeira group and my housemates in Valpo, because I was in contact with my housemates daily for 9 months and have been in contact with my co-capoeiristas, weekly for 4 years. Especially in Santiago I feel like people don't give you the time of day unless they know you already, which sometimes makes it hard for a foreigner to make friends.

Re: My First Impressions of Brussels

I'm glad you guys visited some places you liked, and sounds like you may have found candidates for a more permanent life in one of these places. But it also sounds like you are still looking...

The other place I loved in Europe -granted we were there for a 4 day lightning trip- was Portugal!!! I don't know what kind of jobs you could find there though and don't know much about their economy, but it was gorgeous and the weather was pretty nice and we were there in winter. It was cool but sunny.

Re: My Best of Europe Ratings

Great post. I found it super interesting and useful for anyone planning a trip to Europe.

I agree with Global Butterfly on Spain. I found it super liveable. -Granted I was an exchange student there so it's not the same as living and working.- But I loved the Spanish. They hold the secret to life, as far as I'm concerned: "Hay que gozar de la vida."

Re: My Life of Luxury in Italy

Hahahhahaha. Loved your comment, "They make the Chileans look like the Norwegians." hahaha LOL

I must say Italy is one place I have an idealized idea of in my head and I can't get it out. I have this idea that I'd love it because all I'd do in Italy is eat tasty food, drink tasty coffee, and look at stunning clothing (on the pedestrians and perhaps in shops). Paradise. But any place so idealized in my head is bound to disappoint me.

anyhoo, talk to you later. We'll have to get together at least once while you're here. And perhaps even Paris. I had really low expectations of Paris, just because everyone was always talking about how great it was and it almost seemed more cliché than real to me by the time I went. It's probably not a place I would have even chosen to go if I hadn't been meeting up with a friend living there. But I really liked it, found it super pretty and don't remember seeing dog poop. I think my low expectations may have helped shape my experience as a positive one.

Re: Sarah and Tom, Wedding Ceremony + First Look: Grand Rapids, Michigan

Pretty photos! Nice categories. You are a gringa expert.

Okay, so I was a 9, then a "I-came-here-to-study,-but-not-study-abroad". Perhaps I was the opposite of the gringas avoiding grad school? Since I threw myself into in another country. I actually haven't run into many people in this category. I know of two other gringas doing postgrad studies here plus Leana who just posted that she did her MA here as well. When studying in the U here, people always thought I was an exchange student at first. I kind of was, with the exception that the exchange students always leave Chile, I have yet to.

And I was a cuasi-10 (You can hate me, I don't mind. Chile's made me tough in this regard.) - because I love fanny packs, polainas, messed up pokemon hair, resourcefulness, and other Chilean quirks. I lived in a ghetto neighborhood, to meet friends! haha that sounds funny, but a lot of really cool architecture and design students lived in my ghetto neighborhood. I found the neighborhood to be beautiful, actually (el barrio Chino in Valpo). Spanish among English speakers isn't necessary, but I do prefer that the others speak Spanglish so I don't have to translate myself, hahaha. I didn't isolate myself from gringas, but I mostly ran into number "1"s my first four years here, so our friendships lasted 3-4 months. I preferred Chilean friendship because they last.

Now I'm a 4 and a 2. hehehe. And perhaps someday, after living in the States for a while, we'll move back and I'll be a 3.
