Here's my tip: They don't sew backwards!! If it goes backwards, the thread breaks. But moving the treadle will move the belt either forward *or* backwards so you need to start the machine rolling in the right direction by pulling the wheel on the right toward you with your hand as you start treadling. I watched a ton of YouTube videos. Good luck restoring & learning on your sweet machine!

Re: Just A Dog

Well, hey. I didn't know Chile and still I cried when I saw his little end date on Instagram. So add me to the list of people who don't believe in "just" animals. This essay eloquently, heartrendingly, spells out exactly how I would feel in the same situation. Thanks for putting such difficult feelings into words. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Re: DIY Japanese Masking Tape Dispenser!

That's awesome!!

Re: Helping Others: Joplin, Missouri Fundraiser

Don't enter me in the raffle!

My donation amount: $25
My tracking code: 1555-7927-1-5009341-5543059

You are so awesome to organize this, I am thrilled to be able to donate an item to the raffle and participate. Thanks for your insights. I am humbled and grateful :) I am happy to help in any way I can! I see great promise in your business as you are highly skilled and thoughtful about your work. And you have a great partner in your fiance. I look forward to watching you succeed!

Re: Do what you believe in

This is so true! I realized a while ago that though I am running a business I am not doing it for the money, not that alone anyway. If my business grew so much that I wasn't able to make my items anymore and had to outsource, that would defeat the whole idea of my business! I need to straddle the delicate balance of making enough to keep making :) Good luck on your quest!

Re: Cupcake Pincushion!

Yay!! These are so gorgeous :) If I won them I would store my current knitting/crochet projects in them. Also, since I know how many things I need to make and sell to buy something, money has more value to me, which also keeps me from spending so much. And now I'm spending mostly on handmade goods when I do!

I've always made and sold things, always had a side business, but full time since 2007.

Re: Enough Money to Quit the Dayjob

I think this is excellent info and well said. I never know what to say to people who look longingly at me when they find out I run my own business full time.

I quit my last day job by accident in that I was fired, heh. After a few jobless months I realized I had been spending a lot on my day job; gas money, clothing, car repairs, and the unnoticed dollars flying out of my bank account as retail therapy to assuage the pain my soul experienced when working for someone else.

I had already been running this business as a sideline for over a decade when Etsy made it possible for me to expand worldwide. Meanwhile, I noticed my husband was paying the bills without my help. DING! So now I craft full time, it's early years and I am bringing in a part time salary, we economize like everyone, but oh the joy I experience! And no more retail therapy.

Re: http://www.classiceliteyarns.com/WebLetter/110/Issue110.php

Great report! I agree, hand felting is a lot of hard labor :) Different wools will felt differently too, and even different skeins of the same wool can felt differently. *sigh* You just have to be flexible, like you were when you thought of turning the laptop in another direction.

Re: Impressive Pencil Art by Jennifer Maestre

Jen is not only a brilliant artist who works hard and makes amazing sculptures, she is also a super fun person!
