agreed. i too would like to diss on something that's really cool simply because they use an insanely common and mainstream login system. i mean, obviously i'm too cool to debase myself to logging in with facebook -- even a fake facebook account -- they should know that.

indeed. you're conflating value and price.

value comes solely from what your customers think about your product and services. based on that value, they will choose how much to pay for it. if it's a premium above your competitors, it's because you're serving their needs that much better -- it's not just because you are charging more for it.

let me say that again:
your brand's value is not dictated by the price of your goods and services.

instead:
your brand's price should be dictated by the perceived value of your goods and services.

despite what you think, consumers don't want everything for free. (our ridiculous levels of consumer debt should tell you that much) if your goods or services are worth what you're charging for them, they'll gladly pay. you have to prove you're a premium brand before you can charge premium prices.

successfully fill a consumer need at an fair price and your brand image will skyrocket.

if you're writing on a pc (as opposed to a mac) the absolute best tool is writemonkey. it's freakin' awesome. so much so, that myself, i've paypal'd the developer a donation for his free product.

a) why do we do it? because we have a 5-to-1 read to write ratio in a heavy gameplay data context for a free-to-play game where every penny of arpu counts. so, rather than cluster 3 mysql servers, we can do the bulk of the operations on an easily sharded, single redis server with a load of 0.2 and plenty of headroom.

b) as to facebook? um. well, they have 10,000 memcache servers sitting in front of their mysql servers for starters.

sweet. thanks for indulging me.

i'll assume we're talking web realtime -- within a few seconds. tho, i still have a couple questions here. i'm feeling all kinds of enlightened.

1) how in god's name do you do that without a huge stack of iron in the back sharded to the extreme?

2) we were building an event processing queue and were getting hung up processing non-linear data transforms. so, like the difference between average and median. how on earth do you calculate median? or do you step back across the whole dataset?

interesting. so, you consume 30 or 40 thousand events events a second, process them, and store the results for a real time front end? with an rdbms? or are you talking queued for later?
