That quote in particular is really challenging me right now. A lot of times I'm tempted to stop at theology and intellectual ideas, but I don't want to forget that Jesus calls us to love God and each other with not just our minds, but also with heart, soul, and strength.

Re: Poets, Prophets, & Preachers: Final Thoughts

"For me personally, it's hard to listen to Pete and stay within the church at all. I'm not saying this should be the case for everyone, that's just my own struggle."

Yeah, I feel that pull too. And it's hard to really know what to do with that. I'm fascinated by the transformance art aspect of Ikon and I love how they seem to often leave the meaning behind their actions undefined. It's like living, breathing, questioning parables. But at the same time I find myself saying "You just can't do that in a church meeting". Maybe because I've always been taught that church as a safe place where everything makes sense and people are strengthened to go back out into the world and try to not mess up (which I know is a distorted view of our purpose, but I think it's subtly still in my head and heart on some level).

But the way Peter was talking, that's just believing in the structure to support us. Maybe church should be the very place where difficult questions are asked, where firm "truths" are exposed as shaky, where we strip away every structure that holds us up and believes for us. Including the structure of the church, itself?

Honestly, I don't know that most American churches would survive a change like that. At least not very many of the ones I've been involved with, and they've been good strong churches. This would be the insurrection... But maybe in order to live, the Church has to die...

Thanks for letting me think through my keyboard! :)

Re: Poets, Prophets, & Preachers: Final Thoughts

My brother and I both noticed the seeming contradiction between Rod and Peter, and we talked about it a lot. One thought is that Rob's goal seems to be to help people move one more step in their journey. Get the A's to B, get the B's to C, get the K's to L, and so on. I think there are a lot of people who might be so lost or overwhelmed with Peter's perspective that they would shut him out entirely. But for people who are in the right place and time (like many of those at PPP), Peter's approach is exhilarating! Maybe the goal then for all the pastors should be to ask "How can I begin instigating a revolution in my church that everyone can join in?". I don't know. Maybe that is just another form of venting the air and keeping the status quo?

Thanks for bringing up the question and starting the discussion.
