That being said, I don't think any of the points there COMPLETELY discredit the findings made in the paper. As Dr. Oremland said in his talk today at NASA (a very interesting presentation if you can find it somewhere), these are just the first results that point toward a very interesting conclusion. He openly invites a number of more rigorous tests to be conducted.

I think one reason the paper seems kind of weird is that it was compiled by a lot of different people and none of them had a particularly clear idea of how the research should be conducted. Most papers are the result of a highly planned research project where the outcomes are much highly controlled. These guys were working without a net, it seems. I'm glad they stuck their necks out.

Re: Science Is Sexy: Why Do NASA’s New Arsenic Bacteria Matter?

Agreed, this is the kind of thing we should actually EXPECT to see. That being said, we don't usually expect such things (even if they make sense), so it strikes us as sensational. Still, I think there are some neat possibilities that stem from this.

Personally I'm interested in how the organism can deal with alternative forms of DNA (variable proteins or variable transcription??).

Re: Science Is Sexy: Why Do NASA’s New Arsenic Bacteria Matter?

Thanks for the correction. They recently rolled out automatic transfers for regular monthly saving and the funds have been doing reasonably well. I haven't made MILLIONS, but I've already beaten a standard savings account interest level (net), so it's paid for itself.

They still haven't put up an iPhone app and the site is still Flash-only, though, so they have some work to do.

Re: Too Freaking Cool! At first I was a fanatic about it, but now that I understand Fair Use Doctrine, i'm beginning to see why it's actually kind of redundant. I think Fair Use needs to be fleshed out better instead of CC and other things needing to help out extra-legally. IMHO

Down and Out was actually a course material for me and it was neat that I could listen to an audiobook of it for free that somebody did :P Definitely read it if you haven't!

Re: What I’m Missing

Wow! It seems like you were destined for it, since their first testing grounds for it in America are....TEXAS :P

As streaming video and downloading become more common, bandwidth capping is going to become more attractive to the ISPs over here. Let us know what kinds of change you had to make to your usage to fit everything in! Streaming video would probably be the hardest for me. 1GB is like nothin!

Re: An American Cell Phone in…London

From what I know, unlocking is definitely a good option. The phone companies rarely allow unlocks because they want to tie you to their service plans, but when you say "going overseas" it's usually a magic bullet. Good luck hooking it all up over there!

Re: I Lied for a History Class

Well first off....I agree with your classmates on using your name: "Though some of my classmates pointed out that I could actually use my experience on the project as an advantage for job interviews in the future..." - it would be hard to mistake this project as some kind of malicious hoax, IMHO, and I'd be surprised if a future boss would be dense enough to extrapolate some kind of malice from this act....

I think that this post, particularly its tone, demonstrates the different worlds we live in. Among bloggers and the newer generation of online journalists (especially tech journalists) this kind of project is generally applauded because it serves as a kind of test case for fraud on the internet. Besides that, any wild stories that hoaxers weave eventually become part of the wonderful culture of the internet. The Montag monster (sp?) is a good example of this. While this hoax may have been carried out by a small group and later revealed, it is one of many many hoax projects that have been celebrated as of late.

Most recently I participated in a hoax which re-ennacted the War of the Worlds broadcast through twitter (#wotw2). The few people who were alarmed by it generally either didn't care after it was revealed or marveled at the genius of the idea.

As a member of said technorati, I offer you congratulations on a gag well pulled-off :P

Re: Four-Eyes 4 Life

Sad story :/

Btw, I'm trying to figure out what your shirt says...and cannot...

Btw, btw, I'm FINALLY getting around to reading your Wikipedia-related article...
