Congrats on the launching of such a useful site!

For those unable to attend this powerful talk, I have listed Dr. Jeffrey Sachs idea for a "GOOD MEMO TO THE NEXT PRESIDENT" and the TEN POINTS he would like to see that President take on the day he/she is inaugurated:

1) GET OUT OF IRAQ IMMEDIATELY-would save 200 billion a year. Use a small part it towards UN peacekeeping in that part of the world.

2) RECOUP FISCAL REVENUE- End Bush Tax Cut- would save 250 billion

(with #1 and #2 added together --NOW WE HAVE SAVED 450 BILLION more a year to invest towards the world's environmental crisis!)

3) MAKE MASSIVE INVESTMENT INTO SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY- Create a new Nat'l Institute of Sustainable Technology and spend 30 Billion a year on sustainable tech and R and D (CCS plants, solar thermal, plug-in hybrids...)

4) SEND A "CLIMATE ENVOY" to countries such as Moscow, Delhi, Tokyo etc...and get back to the negotiation table setting up a post Kyoto framework to mitigate carbon emissions

5) URGE CONGRESS TO RATIFY TWO OTHER CRITICAL TREATIES
which we stepped out of..
a) CBD (Con Biological Diversity)
b) The UN Convention on Law of the Sea

6) HONOR GENEVA CONVENTION!

7) STOP CORN TO ETHANOL (uses 6 or 7 billion spent here to take our food and put it in our gas tank.
(all current presidential candidates have endorsed corn based ethanol)

8) RESTART US CONTRIBUTIONS to UN CONTRACEPTION FUND-
"The President needs to get used to saying CONDOM and CONTRACEPTION. It's time to think about POPULATION CHALLENGES and re-commit to the agreement made in 1994 in Cairo,,, that everyone should have a right to contraceptive service."

9) REBUILD SOME MEASURE OF COMPETENCE in a Cabinet Level Department on International Sustainable Development
Invite- Mali, Senegal, Niger, Suden, Ethiopia, Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Chad as well of mayor Atlanta, Phoenix and PM of Australia… to a "Conference on the Crisis of the Drylands".

Water is the hardest single thing to receive/develop in a dry land region.
(US has dealt with this by sending counter insurgency forces to bomb places like an already 'baked' Somalia)

10) To see in the Inaugural Address- THE MILLENNIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS (of the 2000 Millennium Declaration)
(the main goal basically being that the world will look out for each other in the objective to fight hunger, disease, poverty.)

We also agreed in the MONTEREY CONSENSUS (signed in 2003) that 70 cents out of every $100 would go towards International development of these poorest countries. (We are at 16 cents. ) And, our aid to Africa is 4 cents out of every $100. We will spend more on the military this year than the entire world will give in aid to Africa for ALL TIME.

....................McCain still says that "The challenge of our time is Islamic extremism"

I send this knowing that this site is based on local NYC sustainability but encompasses a much broader global view..
thanks so much -
Janet S
www.minemineallmine.org
