I just wanted to point out that starting a discussion "cherry picking" one thing an portray it as bold and funny seem to me like a bad way to start a conversation. But I stay corrected: you didn't mean to be rude or unpolite. Just a misunderstanding like when I used to get to bars and the girls shoot me with their peeper spray.

Not, seriously I'm relaxed and really very open minded to see your points in this issue (which I think we basically agree). I have take a look at you job and it's awesome, and it's pretty clear that you know this stuff much more than me. I just ride my bike. So I'm only trying to put how I see things from my perspective. I've just reply to Portlandize explainig what is my vision of the Spanis bike facilities situation.

About demimismo. As you already know for sure we're not the same person but I know him personally and he's a really nice guy, unlike me he's very attractive and have a lot to do with my decision to ride everywhere in my town. So I hope Portlandize forgives him if he got offended with all the cowboy stuff, and me for thinking that it was hilarious.

Portlandize: your actitude has being wonderful all the time, don't get the cowboy thing personal.

I'm enjoying a lot this conversation actually.

Man, I totally agree with the 99% of your reply. Just want to point out something very Spanish related, so I let me emphasize those two things: I'm not arguing with you or think you reasoning is wrong and what I'm going to talk about it's a problem we have in Spain and don't have freaking idea if it's the same or not elsewhere.

The picture is this: we've got cities wehre it is (or it seems) dangerous to ride a bike. The majority of the "bike activism" here thought that everything would be solved if they could force the government to build bike lines (well, to be honest, the probably thought more things like traffic pacification and so, but they decided to focus their demands on that).

What has happen where they've become strong enought to be listen, is that some local governator have built really bad bike lines. Now the force the bike activism used to have is pretty deluded: "You asked for bike lines, there you have bike lines. And remember to stay inside and not annoy" is basically what every politician involved is saying. And what it's worse, lot of people in that "bike activism" seems to be more than proud with that shit. Don't get me wrong, they've done a really good job trying to improve everybodys life, but insted of being pissed of because they (we) have been fooled, they prefered to shake hands with majors, governors and alike and tell at each other how awesome they are, knowing that his city it's worst in terms of biking.

So, provided we've seeing failure after failure on the "bike line now" demands/strategy, some just think that if you do the same it's pretty obvious that you're gonna get the same results. I think people should focus on all or some the other things we've already talked about to improve the use of bikes in the city. Because I think if my city ever have a bike line we'll be screwed.

Dude that's a very bad and rude start, don't you think?

I'm not saying anything about the bike lines infrastructure you have in Netherlands, I'm saying it's impossible to have the same good-quality-enough-for-everybody in every city. The same way it's is impossible to have and airport in every freaking town.

I'm not gonna discuss with you about Netherlands, you live there. I don't have a freaking idea of how cool is it. You say so and put some data about the number of cyclist and so. What you want to hear? That you're right? Yes you are. In Netherlands.

I live in the north of Spain and I'm telling you it has nothing to do with Netherlands, and it's very easy to see: pick some cities and take a tour with google maps for example.

I have just post a comment where I tries to show my point about bike lines and the place where I live. So I will not repeat myself to save you the boredom of reading it again.

I have to said that I have no experience ridding outside Spain.

As a totally not scientific fact, where I live, I'm seeing a slowing grow on people using their bikes to do their daily rides (like going to work) and I'm living in a town which will need a nuclear war and a million years to even start to think about really useful bike lines, I blame politicians but I understand that it will be architecturally impossible to came up with it too.

I'm a fan of road biking, just because I think biking on the sidewalks is, at least, unpleasant for both, pedestrians and bikers alike. I don't like an adrenaline rush every time I get on my bike (and to be honest I don't have them), most of the time I ride because I want to get somewhere. ^_^

I was scared of taking some of the streets with my bike, so used the sidewalks till I watched someone calmly riding where I thought it was incredible dangerous. Next day I did the same. And I'm seeing this pattern happening to a lot of people in my town. But I repeat, I have no scientific data to prove my point.

What I'm trying to state is that, bad built bike lines (which are the best bike lines you could come up in some places) will make live more difficult to riders when they get outside of them, so I will always advise to think a lot before going to a city where you feel unsafe riding and telling everyone that the should have bike lines. You take the risk that some evil politician command to built some lame-bad-thought bike lanes making, as a result, an unsafer city for bikers.

Another thing I'm trying to say (which is very very personal) it's that it is very healthy for the "bikers community" to get back road as a place that we naturally own.

Let's do something revolutionary not only in blogs, but for human relationships in general: provided we've got different points of views, I'm going to say that I agree with you :)

I mean, I can't say you've said something wrong on you last comment: livable places, hybrid solutions, common sense, calming the traffic... I'm ok with all of that. And I think demimismo does too, at some point at least.

That said, I just wanted to know If somebody gets the point I was talking about: how provide bike lines could get the situation worst, as it had happened on some Spanish cities.

Just trying to get to a position we could share and then begin to understand why this conversation seems so polarized, which is crazy.

I think you could see the point demimismo is talking about f you change just a little bit the main characters: let's forget about bikes for just one second, and look at the pedestrians vs cars issue. Historically people has being put out from places they owned by vehicles with the excuse of safety (notice I'm not saying it was a bad nor incorrect argument). So we got a lot of space which used to be "property" of pedestrian now belongs to cars and alike. And is probably safer I guess.

But that situation/segregation has lead to ... I own a car (a little one), and consider myself not a good driver but a patience one. But sometimes, when a see a pedestrian crossing in front of me where isn't suppose to be allowed I feel kind off attacked: I feel he's taking MY space, I own the road because I'm a driver. I think that's one the things that segregation comes with.

Keeping with the pedestrians-cars situations just for a little bit more: I can deny that, as a pedestrian, I could go wherever I want inside the city using only the paths I'm allowed to use. Sometimes it could get a little tricky, long or even dangerous, but I can do it. Traveling to a near town I could not, at least not without using space reserved to vehicles.

Assuming bike lines are the solution, there's no way every city could have tracks to reach as much places as roads or sidewalks. Not even near. Never.

So, to sum up, in my humble opinion, traffic segregation only leads to places you can not ride to. To ghettos. And every time you get out of them, you will be received with more and more aggressive behaviors, because you've accepted that roads are not your place. And they are.

Tekken was kinf of cool at some point, I really enjoyed Tekken 2. But, to be honest, I have much more fun playing the first Bloody Roar.
