As they say, 1 backup is none, 2 backups is 1.

I use SuperDuper to automatically clone of my primary drive every day at noon. When it starts cloning, I go for lunch. I also have TimeMachine running, for more frequent data backups. On top of that, I use BackBlaze.com ($5/mth) for cloud backups. And finally, I use iCloud Photo Library for an additional backup of my photos and videos, AND I sync it down to another Mac at another location.

I got serious about backups when I bumped my harddrive when transferring it from an old PC to a new PC in 2000. The drive head crashed, and I lost ALL my data. It cost me $2500 to get it back via a Data Recovery company out of Toronto. A painful lesson.

Re: After Slack-like chat features, Skype now adding Snapchat-style photo filters

Skype has become a dumpster fire. It constantly crashes, or doesn't show the latest messages. The smallest you can get the UI to be is over 1/4 of a 1080p display. Everything is huge and in your face. Screen Sharing has been moved to the [+] button? It just doesn't make any sense.

Re: Apple’s HomeKit Has Its First Light Switch

Lutron Caséta wall switches are hard-wired and awesome. What could those be? Maybe they also added a custom audio processing chip that'll effectively give all headphones built-in noise cancellation? Maybe headphones connected via lightning can suck energy from the iPhone so they don't need their own batteries. Maybe they can alter how you hear the environment around you to give you super-hearing. Maybe there are lots of other benefits we haven't even thought of. Headphones are an area that's ready for innovation. They're the next big thing in wearables.

Re: Analysts corroborate reports claiming the iPhone 7 will feature a Force Touch Home button

Force Touch is the old name. That's fine -- just realize that mechanics will always be a minority. If you delete one or many files from iCloud or Dropbox, that deletion will instantly happen across all your devices, and the data is gone. The cloud is not a backup. Get & use something like Superduper, CarbonCopyCloner, or Backblaze, all of which I have used and loved.

Re: Inaugural Post: How I'm running this ghost blog in docker

congrats on a great first post :)

Re: The London Roundhouse Project — Ducts in a row. So are telephones (for social hacking). Come to think of it, so is SMTP, which sends email. Oh, and DNS. Having DNS makes hacking a lot easier. And IP addresses. Hacking is much easier thanks to IP addresses. Come to think of it, computers are the best hacking tools. Outlaw them and we'll definitely all be safer and better off.

Re: Analysis of the Human Birdwings

All you have to do is look at the guy's legs as he takes off and starts to fly. At first they're dangling, but then they straighten out and follow behind him. This thing is not a hang-glider. There's nothing holding his legs up in the air. The only thing that *would* do that is significant airspeed, which he does not have. That "pose" just looks better on-camera.
