It sometimes gives me little bruises on my hip bones, but, for the most part, I have liked it and used it on every long run, including a marathon. Lately, I have been wanting water on those mid-length runs (5-8 miles) when the hydration belt seems like way too much. I bought the Amphipod handheld and after a couple runs getting used to it, I like it. I got the one with the insulator sleeve so the temperature and condensation doesn't affect me and it absorbs a bit of the sweat.

Re: Ragnar Relay -- Looking for Runners

I am SO interested. I should know soon if our financial situation is changing. I have been offered a place to stay, so that is nice. Does the registration fee include the support vans? I need to figure in all the hidden fees before I commit 100%. But put me down...

Re: Gibtown Runner: Follow-up Visit Part 1

Oh man! That sucks! I would definitely get a second opinion. I agree... you need a specialist.

I hope you don't have to stop running for that long. I just sent you eight packs of Gu's...that might be like rubbing it in.

Good luck getting yourself fixed up!

Re: Hip Baby Hip

Wow...that sucks. My husband lived with hip pain for YEARS. His involved the bone though, not the soft tissue. Hip surgery, however, is a pretty big deal. I hope you don't have to go there. I doubt it would be as bad as my husband's (his was an entire resurfacing; just shy of replacement).

I am glad your knees feel better. Take care of yourself.

Re: More Footstrike Stuff

LOL... I thought I had read this post, but must have missed the part about the shorter strides. I am glad that my analysis of my own gait matched the research you have done. We're on the same wavelength, right?

Re: Footstrike Stuff

In my training, we didn't talk all that much about form, believe it or not. The answer given regarding form was: form will follow function. What is meant by this is if you train appropriately and run, run, run, proper form will follow as you get more efficient. They discussed the fact that there are very successful long distance runners that have strange footstrikes. They gave an example of an elite athlete who ran an entire ultra landing on his forefoot. It is what works for him.

I just looked up some info in a book they gave us ("Running Strong and Injury Free" by Janet Hamilton). Here is what it says: " Between 75& and 90% of runners contact the ground heel first." So you are NORMAL. It goes on to say that it is normal to hit with the outside of your heel (slight supination) and roll forward toward the big toe (slight pronation) in order to properly absorb shock and take off. She further states that it is not a good idea to try to change your gait. While fixing one part, you might cause inefficiencies in other parts. The author recommends changing variables such as shoes, flexibility, strength or terrain rather than trying to consciously trying to change your gait.

I bet that was more info than you wanted, huh?

Re: Put Me in Coach

I'll be interested to see how you like it. My heart goes out to the people that weren't so lucky.

When I lived in Kansas and Missouri, I had my share of tornado sirens. The stress of anticipation was as bad as anything (although I can imagine that the feeling of helplessness of being so far from home sucked big time). I just hated sitting in my basement listening to sirens and wondering....

Personally, I prefer the earthquakes of California. By the time you realized you've had one, it is over. ;-)

Re: City Run Ain't No Fun

I have a 205 and the Garmin software never worked quite right for us. I have been very happy with Sport Tracks.(http://www.zonefivesoftware... It seems much more customizable. I try not to take what the Garmin tells me while I am running as gospel. It always seems to be a little different after I upload it anyway.

I've always loved Seattle. Have fun while you're there!

Re: Race Report: 3rd Annual UCO Homecoming 5K Run

Way to go!!! That is an AWESOME time!!! Now I am inspired. I am running my first 5K next week and wondering if I can run a decent pace. I think it is like you have to put it into another gear. After reading your report, I am excited to run it!

Congratulations on a fabulous PR!!

Re: Another Day at Mizuno Lab

Good luck on your run! I hope the new shoes do the trick!

I love the idea of sizing down the t-shirts for Piper. When mine was hurting so much, I took an entire week off. RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) is the key, although elevation didn't seem to help much. I used an ace bandage for compression.

Try a foam roller and roll the heck out of it (it worked wonders for me). Sometimes a good deep tissue massage will do it too. From my research when I was suffering from ITB issues, often there is an area that just needs to be worked out in the IT Band or even the ham string. That's what happened to me. A friend of mine tried ART, which worked but hurt like hell.

I hope you feel better soon. A friend of mine helped me see that as a new runner, my body was getting used to all the pounding and the muscles and connective tissue just needed to get stronger.

Go do some swimming :-)

Re: Going off the Grid

I think it is GREAT that you are doing the full marathon. My training program was 20 weeks total, so I actually think you are right on track. I was a novice runner when I started the program. I only did one 20+ mile run (I did a couple 16's, a 17 and 18) I don't think you'll regret your decision. In fact, if you did the half, I think you would look longingly at the people going past that 13.1 mark and wish you were too.

Re: More good runs

Enjoy running in Santa Monica. The weather in Southern CA is great this week.

Good luck at the wedding. It is only a few days out of your life. And I am seriously considering #7, although I am not sure why they call it the San Diego Marathon-- it is the Carlsbad Marathon. I think the Rock-n-Roll is up there because of the awesome crowd involvement. It is a huge community event and there is so much support.

I have heard that the Maui Marathon is REALLY hard. I am sure it is in the top 10 because it is in Maui. I bet a lot of those races are ranked because they make great vacations (with the exception of Duluth, maybe-- no offense to Minnesotans out there *wink*)

I hope you enjoy your trip. That seems like a very short turn-around for such a long flight etc.

Re: Long run make up day

Ah yes... sleeping in for me is 7 a.m. Even on Mother's Day, when my hubby offered to get the kids breakfast etc. I couldn't sleep much past 7. In the old days, I could sleep all morning!

I am glad you had a great run with great weather! I hope that Mother Nature gives you a pleasant surprise again for your next long run.

Btw, does your wife know you refer to her as "Wifey?" *wink* I think that would get my husband a bonk on the head. But, then again, I refer to him as "hubby" so I suppose all's fair. ;-)

Re: The Long Run That Wasn't

Oh man... sorry about your run today. That is a bummer. This summer training is going to be tough, huh?

I am also jealous about your trip. I hope you are able to find a race... how cool would that be? Even if you don't finding a running route in a strange place is exciting.

Re: The Nike Ghost in the Machine

Chris and Alissa, YOU ROCK! I went to Nikeplusedit and restored my marathon data! I am sure I will be shunned from the Nike+ forum now, but oh well.... I have my 26.2 miles logged!! To be fair, I deleted the 3 miles that I did get recorded.

Btw, Chris.... where are all your comments?? Do you have a techno poltergeist?

Re: The Nike Ghost in the Machine

Chris, I am SO happy that it worked. It really made me smile that someone got some use out of that info. I have accepted my lost marathon miles (although Alissa's post below once again restores my hope that I can add the marathon!)

Re: The Nike Ghost in the Machine

I think your data can be found. First, try this: reset your iPod by hitting the menu and the center button until the apple logo comes on. Then plug it in again and see what happens. After my 15K that happened and I was able to get the info.

If that doesn't work, one of the Nike people on the Nike + forum gave me a long involved process to try to find my 19 miles. It didn't work for me, but my iPod locked up before I ever heard the results. Here is the link to the forum; look for the message from Nike+ Pro 16. http://forums.nike.com:80/thread.jspa?messageID=182435 HTH!

Believe me...
