I appreciated the author's descriptions of the different physical traits of grizzly versus black bears. They are important to know. I do have different opinions about using a firearm to stop a bear attack. I rely not on my own experience, but on the opinions of Phil Shoemaker, an Alaskan guide, who killed a large grizzly with five shots from a short-barreled, 9mm S&W semiauto, and Tim Sundles, whose article on stopping bears with a firearm I found authoritative. Principally, when using a handgun, I agree with Shoemaker's posted opinion that one should use the largest centerfire cartridge that a person can bring into action quickly and fire most accurately. But I found Sundles' reliance on a carbine to be the best "heat" to bring to a bear encounter. I would choose a short-barreled, lever action carbine in .454 Casull loaded with Sundles' dangerous game bullet, a 300 grain, wide flat-nosed monolithic projectile. If I could find a light weight, short barreled rifle with a straight pull action, I might use that instead of a lever action carbine.

May be too late to beat diabetes, but always a good idea anyway. At a minimum it will help control high blood sugars.

For a number of years, I have followed Ammoland's reports of bear attacks. Their reporter, Dean Weingarten, provides engaging updates on reported attacks and the weapons people used to defend themselves. Tim Sundles of Buffalo Bore has also written a very interesting opinion piece on bears and firearms, including handguns, in which he recommends various calibers to use against bear attacks. I welcome Chris Baker's article. It is very interesting as well and ranks right up there in my mind with what Weingarten and Sundles have had to say on the subject. I would certainly buy my self-defense ammo from Lucky Gunner in tribute to Baker's fine articles, but they do not sell to residents of California.

No. We should enable government, as well as non-government groups, to help the mentally unstable and those most likely to act violently. We must teach gun safety in school and require knowledge of it by would-be gun owners. We must deport aliens who have criminal records. We should increase police presence in high crime urban areas and allow the cops to do their job.

Mistakes can always be defended and with much stronger defenses that are often offered to excuse a deliberate crime. Each mistake needs to be judged on its individual merits and demerits of the issue, the same as weighing the outcome of a willful act.

Many years ago I owned two mini-14s from the first series and fired perhaps a total of slightly more than 2,000 rounds through the both of them combined, almost all cheap factory loads for about $3.25 per 20 rounds. I never had a FTF or a FTE. I never had a misfire. I think I paid $299 for each of them and sold the last one for $600+. I am sorry to read that the 580 series is so unreliable and at such a high price. But that has been my experience with American made products for the most part my entire life.

Where is the detailed analysis highlighting its delayed blow back technology? Where is the history of the reloading development offering a variety of load formulae for various uses such as self-defense, hunting small game, hunting large dangerous game, and snake loads. I missed the survey of models currently for sale on the internet. And pictures. Where are the pictures showing the inner workings and installation of an after market trigger kit that will reduce trigger pull? This article is too short. Where are the historical anecdotes of famous folks who carried the Remington 51 and their life threatening encounters where the 51 saved the day?
