This is probably based on how many bathrooms are available. In general, whiteboards everywhere. For me personally, some sort of "part-time, i don't need a dedicated desk, i just need space and quiet" co-working space

2.For UGs, an open area that seats 50, a projector and screen.

3. I'd be happy to lend a hand with any renovation work via my construction company, and can help source and organize materials / subs. Also, count me in for a personal donation.

3b. Every established event / user group that you've seen at SC or around town has a working budget of some sort. Charge fee for use of the space. Maybe it's based on ability. Maybe it's based on services the space provides (cleaning, security, furniture, etc) but charge something to offset cost.

I dig what you're doing here Geoff. How can I help?

Re: Installing a Hudson CI Server on Amazon EC2 with Cucumber and Capybara and Github integration

Here's the reason for the rename: http://www.theserverside.co...

I am having an issue with my setup, and I don't know that it's related to anything here, but maybe you can help or at least point me in the right direction. I had never setup an EC2 instance and got hung-up there for a bit, but once I got through that, this was great. The only update that should be made (that I recall) is that instead of "rvm gem install hudson", you need to do "rvm gem install jenkins" and "rvm gem install jenkins-war".

Re: http://dr3pts.tumblr.com/post/871061700

I cannot wait for opening day...

Re: http://blog.titanous.com/post/867488976

great timing with this project. I was planning to add functionality like this to my app, and now have a tool to get me started with.

btw, regarding the name comments, if mailman is an issue, why not go for mailroom? after all, this app receives mail and routes it to where it should go. much like a mail room at a business.

Re: How To Pitch Your Startup to a Complete Stranger

Completely agree. I'm in my first startup, and when I realized it was time to find co-founders, community events paid off in spades compared to anything else I was doing. It allowed me to grow my network, get to know people better, and to understand who was in each of their networks.

In addition to finding a co-founder, my personal network has grown, and I've added to my list of potential early adopters.

Re: AsAble.com interview of Shane Mac @shanemacsays

Shane and Giang, it was great meeting both of you at Big Omaha. I was surprised to see that kind of profile data and hope that it gets put to use well.

Search abilities could use an overhaul, and the site wasn't super responsive. Three months from now I'm sure that will all change.

Re: Conference to showcase innovations in infant abduction…wait, what?

I keep giggling about this.

Think of the demo the could have with that topic.

Re: Startups can be fun, but at what cost?

I've found the best way to balance work with family is to set expectations with everyone involved. Setting 1 or 2 nights a week that you treat your startup or freelance project as a second job works well. This means no scheduling of kids sports, date night, etc. Outside of that, taking advantage of time when your spouse and/or kids are out of the house, or in sleeping is another good time to get things done w/o interfering with the family schedule.

Sleep is nothing a few cans of Red Bull can't fix...

Re: Expanding Capital Availability for High-Tech Start-Ups

I think the comments here magnify the fact that there is a lot of activity in Central Iowa, and Iowa as a whole.

Personally, the idea of a mentor company providing resources for a start-up in exchange for a stake in the resulting company is very interesting to me.

I agree with Dan that just about every tech person you talk to in the area has some grandiose idea, myself included. And most of us need to, and are willing to maintain the 9-5'er to pay the bills, working 5-9 on the idea. The problems I see people running into is when they start to need other skill sets that what they themselves possess. Some sort of a mentorship program, or even a community pool of ambitious people with varying skill sets would have a huge impact for these people and their ideas.
