In a situation like the one you describe, I would almost certainly do something like this. Say that direc is the directory of concern.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;    mv direc direc-yyyy-mm-dd-hhmmss&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;This moves the directory out of the way.
