I've been writing software since I graduated from college in 1974. I don't know how many times I have been laid off, perhaps half a dozen or so. It doesn't even bother me anymore. I have my savings cushion and I have never been out of work for very long --I think the longest was about 6 weeks. The shortest was two days.

I have been stung too. In a situation like the one you describe, I would almost certainly do something like this. Say that direc is the directory of concern.

mv direc direc-yyyy-mm-dd-hhmmss

This moves the directory out of the way. Now wait for a respectful period of time before deleting direc-yyyy-mm-dd-hhmmss

I really dislike the open floor plan. It is especially bad for software engineers. I once worked for a small company (no names will be given) at which all (eight) of the software engineers sat at the same table. It was horrible.

Another benefit is that (in my opinion) models are much easier to test than controllers
