You are correct - much more jolly. :)

Re: Operaman's Blog - A Christmas present - for my dearly departed Mum.

Thank you so much for this, Nicole. Sadly, my one-handed joint-rolling days are long gone. That may have something to do with being on the verge of celebrating my 70th birthday next June. Smoking has now been replaced by the much more bourgeois gin-and-tonic routine I'm afraid. I am sorry that you, too, are grieving a loss. Yes, it does suck, but I made a conscious decision early on that I would embrace my grief and deal with it rather than ignore it or pretend it isn't there. It is, after all, just a reflection of the love we had for that person while they lived. Sending you much love and many hugs from across The Pond! :)

Re: Operaman's Blog - And there you shall be hanged by the neck until you be dead.

Well yes, Lisa; but I was always so proud of our system here - it's fairness, its integrity and that sort of thing. To see what is happening is a source of great and personal disappointment.

Re: Operaman's Blog - And then sometimes - just sometimes - everything goes wonderfully well!

"Loathesome toad" Kevin...

Re: Operaman's Blog - The more I know about Peter Grimes, it seems the less I understand

Many thanks for both reading and commenting, Vincent. Here's the thing about Ellen. One is led to believe that she is in accord with Balstrode and knows that they are going to go find Grimes in order to send him to his death. But. When it becomes apparent ("Take the boat out and sink her.") she shouts "NO!" and is clearly horrified when she realizes that is what is going to happen. And yet, she has already faced their (she and Grimes) joint failure. I actually don't think it matters how well you know the opera in the sense that so much is ambivalent and you are left to make your own mind up about motivation etc.
I did not see Parsifal but I did see Skelton in Flying Dutchman and his voice clearly suits Wagner.

Re: http://bigthink.com/strange-maps/565-brit-lit-map

But no Charles Dickens??

Re: A Redemption Song for New York

Um, what? The adagietto that was used in Death in Venice is from Mahler's 5th, not 2nd!

Re: Gilbert Gottfried Fired Over Japan Jokes on Twitter

Remember, Gottfried was the guy who told the Aristocrats joke at the Hugh Heffner roast right after 9/11?
