Most Americans do not believe that woman are being denied fundamental rights. Most Americans (shamefully) don't care about gay rights. Most Americans (rightfully) don't equate Medicate and Social Security and welfare with prosperity. But more importantly, the undecideds see something that the political astute all too often do not. Bush was no friend of gay rights, but the gay rights movement made significant advancements during his administration. Obama has been no friend of gay rights for most of his (and arguably all of his) term, but gay rights marches on. Society evolves and improves no matter who is in office. Someone can care about gay rights, and still wonder correctly whether Romney's tax treatment of capital gains would be a more effective stimulus than continued tax credits for special interests. These calculations are enormously complicated, disputed by extremely thoughtful and educated people. So what's amazing is that there aren't more undecided than there are.

Re: Running Chicken: It’s impossible for me to identify with anyone who...

The differences on the other issues are not that substantial. Both of them have pretended to hold certain views on social issues that they probably don't hold. Both of them support the death penalty and the drug war. In terms of foreign policy, both of them think its okay to declare war without going to congress, to wiretap, to indefinitely detain, to assassinate citizens, to use drones. Yes, their Supreme Court picks will possibly make a difference on issues like parental notification for teenage abortions, or maybe campaign finance issues, which won't really matter, because people will just come up with new ways to spend money in support of a campaign. My only point is that it's hard to get a good read on either of these guys because they pander and pretend. The average voter just wants to know who will make things generally better over the next four years. That's not at all clear. I certainly couldn't tell you who between the two of them would make things better, and I'm one of those high-information voters. Yeah, people who care mostly about abortion, or mostly about welfare programs--for them, maybe the choice is clear. But it's entirely rational to care most about prosperity and safety, and if you care about those things, it's very difficult to tell who would be better at them--Romney or Obama.

Re: Running Chicken: It’s impossible for me to identify with anyone who...

Every one of your criticisms of Romney could be applied with equal or greater force to Obama. None of Obama's math adds up--he promised deficit neutral legislation (failed), to reduce the deficit in half (failed), gamed the CBO on Obamacare in a completely fraudulent way that double-counted dollars and relied upon assumptions they've already repealed, lost billions on green energy and other bad bets. In 2008, Obama ran exactly the same way Romney is running now--by pretending that his plans made sense, by pretending that his numbers added up, and by counting on people to be dissatisfied with the current direction and wanting change. For an undecided voter who has see Obama break dozens of key, central promises from his 2008 campaign, the choice isn't that stark. The truth is that the country won't be terribly different with Romney or Obama at the helm, and undecideds are looking for that tiny, marginal difference that they might feel at home. Undecided voters are savvy voters--they sense that Romney is really a pretty moderate guy (like he was as governor) who had to say a lot of things to get the nomination. It's not ignorance that confuses them; it's knowledge. For many people, Obama the candidate turned out to be a fraud. The fact that Romney is one too is not going to be decisive. And the fact that the economy is still pretty terrible is the most important consideration in the daily lives of voters.

Re: http://jeffmillerwrites.tumblr.com/post/33244900908

Nobody wants to hear it read by me.
