So glad you had a successful journey! Yes, certainly there are other options that work well for some women, but this particular discussion at the symposium was for a specific case: women who had had surgery but were still dealing with pain. I never thought about why these "clubs" got more popular as we got older, but your point is so true -- it's our kids!!!! There came that point in my life where I couldn't just "go out" with girlfriends, but I had to plan way ahead of time, and then my friends would have to plan, and then ... plans just started to fall by the wayside.

So when my third child was born, and I'd had enough of missing outings with "the girls," I started a book club with an old friend from high school. She brought 3 friends, I brought 3 friends, and the club was born. And now it's going on 11 years!! We open our arms to new members regularly, but we still have original members. We've all become really good friends over the years -- seeing each other through new babies, new marriages, grown children, etc. (In fact, we're planning a wedding shower right now!) It's such a great group of various ages and backgrounds, and I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. We've gotten to the point, too, where even if we don't read the book, we show up anyway, just to get caught up with each other. (And drink the wine, of course!)

Thanks for another great post!

Re: What’s Happening at This Year’s Governors’ Ball? Great post! Here on the west coast, we're known for our EARTHQUAKES, which are moments of complete panic and irrationality that only last a few seconds but leave the sufferer feeling a little shaken afterward. I love these pictures! And you're so right about kids' games being an amazing workout (which you usually wake up the next morning to discover). I remember playing a game of hopscotch once recently and waking up to find my ONE leg really sore. ... I mean REALLY sore! ... It was crazy. But it did make me think that if I could figure out how to play hopscotch with both feet (I'm not nearly as coordinated hopping on the left), I could probably use that as quite a workout! :)

Thanks for sharing these. So true. I remember being jealous of my child's first daycare provider -- Monica. (Even her name is beautiful!) She always looked perfectly pulled together, always had gorgeous shiny hair, and could even make things like crepes and blueberry pancakes for breakfast. I was perpetually worried that my son would find her preferable to me. But ... as you said ... they never do. They always sense unconditional love that comes only from Mom. :)

Re: Which Action Figures Have You Had in Your Toilet? My daughter is now 24 … ah, the memories!

Juanita J. – The one that took the cake was a Super Mario Bros. Happy Meal toy. He made it up to the “S” then proceeded to block everything out. We ended up having to call in a plumber who couldn’t snake it, so the entire toilet had to be taken up to retrieve that guy. You’ll be happy to know that the 3-year-old who put him in there is now 20 and still has all his limbs.

Pam J. – When my son was 4, the Power Rangers went for a swim but luckily Batman saved them with a bath hook. :)

Patty B. – Star Wars, about 26 years ago!

Candy M. – I have bittersweet memories of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles taking far too many swims in our potty!

Donna G. – Ours were Power Rangers!

Isabel L. – G.I. I can soooooo relate to this post! I, too, love to entertain, but am not the best cook. Plus my house is really the size of a tissue box, making it hard to entertain more than 4 people at a time. :) But I try anyway -- I often host book-club friends (7 - 12 people), and I've even ventured to have Christmas Eve at my house (7-10 people). I love setting the table with beautiful things, and lighting candles all over, and making fabulous cocktails! My book-club friends and family, thankfully, are all the types of people who wave off my apologies for how small my house is and indulge me in my need to be a hostess. They just say it's "cozy" and point out that we tend to stay longer at my house anyway because everyone is comfortable and together and we stay up talking late into the night. ...

Re: Age Has Affected My Very Sole

Great tips, Laura!!!
