They really started the trend of social media for travel companies with their first travel blog way back in around 2009 - great to see that they've kept it up and are developing their strategy based on learnings from their years of experience.

Re: Page

Inside joke? It's such a shame to see social tech being used in this way, when it is also being used in great projects that help to promote access to technology etc..

Re: Social Business Patterns – looking at how social adds value to any business

So you did! Great followup. Even though it may seem crude, incentivising sharing by offering bonuses is probably the way it's most likely to succeed in organisations.

Re: Remarkability: A Digital Marketing Cliché

I love this! Absolutely well said. I have to admit I was a big fan of the Purple Cow when I first read it, but it's not something I really return to, or implement in my day to day work. The messages were good but as you said, not really innovative and it didn't instil in me a desire to do anything different. Amazing sometimes that you (I!) can't see the wood for the trees with something like this though...

Re: Elapsed Time: These Three $50B+ Companies Should Be Fighting Over Foursquare

I can definitely see the potential here but I think that the credit card companies you've highlighted would be reticent to step so strongly into the social space, for fear customers would question the privacy of their data.

The social commerce space is wide open for someone to develop a location-led product, but I think we're going to see a brand new product pop up here rather than one of the incumbents step into a social offering like this (unfortunately).

Would be interested to hear your thoughts on whether you think consumers might find this a bit too creepy, or if we'd get used to the benefits quick enough to stop minding?

Re: Klout, Revisited

You look at it more often than I do! Which is probably as regular as when I happen to blog about Klout (i.e. not many!). The thing is though is that while Klout fans seem to be pretty few, you can't doubt that they've carved a niche in their space. if you're looking for social influence then Klout is pretty much the default.
I think the point you make about them having more data is absolutely key. They have a history of data probably more extensive than any other player in this space and this will continue to serve them well.

Re: Social Business Patterns – looking at how social adds value to any business

Thanks for sharing this report, great find. I think it's worth looking at the issues surrounding 'option 1'. While on paper this sounds ideal, it can be very difficult for a business, particularly a larger one, to actually identify the experts internally they should be using. They can often be in the wrong department or might not be particularly vocal.
It's something that needs to be achieved by having the right infrastructure in place and importantly, open collaborative tools such as Yammer that could help you find these people.

Re: Twitter Index reveals if followers mean clicks

Hi Jeff,

That's a great addition to the post! Overall it's quite surprising just how low the click throughs are. comparing against the number of fake followers would help determine whether some of the more popular accounts simply don't have an engaged (or real audience), or whether instead Twitter just doesn't lend itself to click through traffic, as many social channels don't.

I didn't want to draw that conclusion, but I think a follow-up post featuring these stats from socialbakers would be really useful.

Re: Here’s How Your Brand Can Become a Content Organization

The 'content pillar' table is something that every organisation needs to print out and put on their desks, hang on their wall or print on their mugs. It's amazing how many companies still put posts up on the fly and don't have a content strategy with the right balance. It's such a simple table and easy to stick to, but many won't!

Re: The Paradox Of The World Wide Web

Hi Chris. I appreciate it is probably a sweeping assertion to make but I would still find it difficult to accept that we aren't innately more interested in what happens immediately around us. That's not to say the interest in the global doesn't apply (and indeed as you've said it will do a lot more for some people than others).

When it comes to business I would completely agree with you that in general being global-thinking is more important than being locally minded only. But this is part of a wider business strategy.

The reality of how you would actually achieve success globally is by having a relevant marketing campaign or content that applies to local audiences. I would be more interested for example in hearing about a concert that Pepsi might be sponsoring that I could actually go to, as opposed to the biggest festival in the world that I can't access.

I think the distinction between a business strategy and user needs is important to make here. This is about what content/communities people will find themselves engaging with more.

The point you make on global connections is an important one, and this is what the 'world' part of the world wide web does supply us with :)

Re: The Paradox Of The World Wide Web

I agree! It's not that hyperlocal news projects can't work, but as a separate entity that operates outside of FB they will seriously struggle.

Re: The Paradox Of The World Wide Web

Re: Has Social Media Simply Created The Illusion Of Choice?

Hi, I really like the example of the Facebook login plug-in. We're happy to use this as a single sign-on without being completely aware of the implications of this. When a simple solution like this is presented to us, as with Facebook in general, it's tempting to opt for this...much like choosing to go to one supermarket for everything instead of visiting individual independents to get the best!

Re: Your guide to Twitter’s new search features

Hi Dave, I think they're tackling this by including real name searches, but they could do a lot more to allow people to connect by interest.

Re: Study shows a Facebook post has a shelf life of 18 hours

Good point!
