Thank you for this. Definitely worth ongoing discussion. Another phrase this article brings to mind, also Jungian, "what you resist will not only persist, but grow in size". The "resistance" is a nice catch phrase, but we may be trapping ourselves into a dangerous downward spiral.

This completely leaves out that those who commit terrorism that are US citizens usually aren't charged with terrorism. They are either killed in the incident or written off as insane or convicted of other crimes. These are bogus statistics to only use those *convicted* of terrorism.

Leadership comes from the top and I've yet to hear Trump condemn this rhetoric. And a threat to "destroy" Trump is not a direct threat of violence. There are many ways politicians can be destroyed.

Thank you once again for your eloquence. I was attempting to say the same thing last night. Paris and France are woven in to our own stories. Think Casablanca, American In Paris, Pepe le Pew, Hemmingway, etc. We know their stories and they know ours. We don't know the stories of the Middle East or Africa so they don't provoke the same reactions.

Sorry about commenting here but I can't find anywhere else to leave feedback.

On my laptop the Banter Magazine is unreadable. There's an empty grey bar near the top of the page (tried adblock on and off, no change) and it's pushing the content below the viewable window. The result is there's no continuity page to page. There's no vertical scrolling to see missing content. There also seems to be some sort of function to the group of horizontal lines in the upper left corner as clicking it opens a dark column on the left side of the pages - but there has never been anything in this dark column in any issue of your magazine.

I love idea of longer form articles but your implementation is a total failure for me. Also, there really should be some other way to provide feedback, contact you, etc other than leaving a comment in a random article

the problem with showing these things on tv is that there's usually little to no chance to change the channel if you don't want to see it. It's like autoplay videos. All of them should come with a caveat by the broadcaster and a ample chance to change the channel. On top of that they can choose to not show any of them but to put them on their website for those who do choose to watch them. We have far more choice online of what we do and don't see. I'd prefer that TV err on the side of NOT showing death in their broadcasts and limit those videos to online only. The news value is still there online and the audience gets more choice.

While I utterly deplore the actions of both Josh and his parents I can see it from a slightly different perspective. Parents who don't believe in reasonable sex-education ignore the fact their oldest son is hitting puberty. He, knowing nothing else turns to his sisters to experiment. Being pretty sex ignorant themselves the parents are utterly befuddled about what to do next and send their son to a family friend who also happens to be in law-enforcement and think this is equivalent to reporting it to authorities. They don't know their son is being taught "look but don't touch" by a pedophile. Because they are public figures they choose to keep it as quiet as possible to protect the privacy of their minor children knowing the ever-hungry machine of the press will chew them up and spit them out with no thought what-so-ever of the consequences to the children.

It's oh so very easy to demonize this family for their outrageous beliefs but if we do so we're really stooping to their level of being judgmental aren't we?

thank you for this Chez. Especially poignant for me today as I work (again/still) on clearing out my parents house after their passing. Generations of memories and now endless decisions. Unlike you I can't find a way to walk away from everything and still be responsible to my siblings. I hope like you down the road I'll find new beginnings.
