When I posted about this burger on A Hamburger Today, I had people saying it wasn't all that. Crazy folks.

Re: http://queenslove.tumblr.com/post/18441759770

I think he must live somewhere near The Oven in Astoria, which is where I shot this:
http://www.flickr.com/photo...

(Note the tags ;)

Re: http://queenslove.tumblr.com/post/18197297985

For context, my mother-in-law is from Hong Kong (lives in the Bay Area now), and I've eaten around at various dim sum places in Queens with my wife's family. This was the first time she's seen them at any of the places we've eaten at in Queens. East Ocean, I'd say, is better than average (don't get the Peking duck there, though) and much better than some of the dim sum places we often eat at that are closer to my grandmother-in-law's place.

Re: http://queenslove.tumblr.com/post/18015182262

I'm fascinated by the shops inside buildings adjacent to the elevated train stations. The only two stations I know, though, that connect via skybridge to the buildings parallel are at QBP and Ditmars-Astoria.

I think the Ditmars-Astoria "mini mall" has a lock on awesomeness. It has a comic book store AND an internet cafe. It's nerd heaven.

Re: http://queenslove.tumblr.com/post/18017208713

This is kind of terrifying. ;)

Re: http://queenslove.tumblr.com/post/17952730091

I'm ashamed to say that I only discovered Astoria Ugly via Queens Love. Wish I'd seen it earlier. I recognize a lot of the stuff on there and have thought the same things. Love the "marble pepper grinder" moniker. So true.

Re: http://queenslove.tumblr.com/post/17621180836

I always like to claim JBS for ASTORIA. First time I had it, it was great. Juicy, flavorful, and almost Shake Shack-esque. Second time, still good, but less juicy. The fries are bad. Last time I went, I tried to order the Steakburger without them. They complied and knocked about 20 cents off my order, but they still ended up putting fries in the bag. I'm actually a fan of McDonald's fries, and these are no substitute.

I don't know about the hot dogs. To me, going to Steak 'n Shake and getting a hot dog is like going to a steakhouse and ordering chicken. But you're right: They should do a Chicago dog if only to offer it as a unique item.

They made a lot of noise about that stupid Coke fountain there. BFD. I was in a Duane Reade the other day that had one. If Duane Reade has something, you automatically lose the right to position it as a WOWGEEWHIZ WONDER.

Also: SnS is headquartered in Indianapolis. The first one was in Normal, Illinois, roughly in the middle of the state and a bit away from Chicago, though there do seem to be a number of SnS in greater Chicagoland, if not the city proper.

Blah blah blah.

Re: http://www.alexrainert.com/post/16031149547

This is great. I was worried this would be a theoretical exercise for many Slice/SE readers. Good to hear you have a Baker's Edge and can try this. If you're using that dough I link to and don't have stand mixer, you can mix it by hand and let it sit for 8 to 15 hours. Doing that lets the gluten develop naturally (albeit slowly), obviating the need to knead the dough. IN THAT CASE, use this dough closer to the 8-hour mark, since the longer it sits, the more alcohol the yeast produces. At a certain point, that's good and adds flavor. Past a certain point, it just starts smelling like hillbilly hooch. Especially important if you're going to make two of these, since you'll have to let it sit in the pan for 2 hours each time to rise.

Re: The Olive Harvest: Picking in an Ancient Etruscan Hill Town - Sara Jenkins - Health - The Atlantic

Do you bring the oil home with you to NYC for use in your restaurants there?

Re: DIY Funding : Lonestar Taco

Re: gentrification, and I think you guys have been smart about this, and also genuine ... is that you've had those preview taco cookouts on your stoop. That seems like a nice way to introduce yourself to the community as _people who live there_ and not interlopers looking to cash in on the rush to Bed-Stuy. I think just talking to you two about LST, I can tell you care about the neighborhood and the community there, and I'm sure the neighbors who stop by for tacos can see that, too.

Re: Auberge de la Loube, Buoux, France

Hey! I was just doing some research for an upcoming trip and found this post linked off of a Chowhound thread. We're going to be near here on a walking tour of the Luberon. Though we're not walking through Buoux, I think we'll have to take a taxi here or something. Thanks for the pics!

Re: The Real Restaurants of Liberty City

69th Street Diner, no. But the Sprunk sign is TOTALLY the Pepsi-Cola sign in Long Island City and The Bean Machine's location is a dead ringer for Rockefeller Plaza.
