Chrysler is trading one problem for an even greater one...receiver hitches increase the risk of whiplash by 22% because they create a stiffer "crash pulse"...and there's a lot more rear end collisions that end with whiplash then fires.

With all the liability issues going on right now with OEM's it's hard to imagine they'd be all excited about more technology. They've had recall after recall for standard parts and this will jut put more liability on them.

If you have a receiver hitch on your vehicle then get an impact attenuator from sparebumper dot com. It will keep the tailgaters off your rear and prevent damage and reduce whiplash if they hit you.

So adding receiver hitches to fix one problem will create a bigger one since there are far more rear end collisions resulting in whiplash then getting burned to death. According to the rear end collision data from the Swedish insurance company Folksam and Autoliv 56% of all rear-end crashes are full overlap and 28% of rear-end collisions have 1/3 to 2/3 overlap. Only 14.2% of rear end collisions would be less then 1/3 overlap and end up hitting the outside edge of this under-ride guard as shown in the video. So at least you have statistics on your side. Max is correct. Adding a fixed under-ride guard would transfer all the crash energy to the frame of the bus and eventually the kids. This is similar to a receiver hitch on the rear of a pickup truck or SUV. Receiver hitches actually increase your risk of whiplash by 22% because there is no give.

You are far better off letting the bullet vehicle under-ride the bus. This will dissipate the crash energy over a wider area and longer time frame.

There are energy absorbing under-ride guards and that would be the only way to go. Adding a "fixed" under-ride guard would be suicide for the kids.
