I know of a company that has placed high stakes on SL for its product strategy... ;)

As for the "ramblings of a drunk": it's a bit harsh, but I'm with Davy on this one. I really like developing in silverlight, but it does have its downsides. Some of this issues are pointed out in the post, and then there's Justins rather vague and confusing comment. "We all KNEW this stuff years ago", well... Congratulations! You really convinced me with those razor-sharp arguments :)

Anyway, I'm really curious how everything will look in a couple of years. We will be working with technologies that don't exist yet. Silverlight 8 or HTML 7... It's important to keep the "fanboy and hater" stuff out and to constantly evaluate all alternatives.

Finally: I think most silverlight-based personal homepages tend to be very good... As examples of how to make a slow loading and user-unfriendly website, that is.

Re: Evolving Reading Interests, Part Two

They all look like great books... Recently I really started to enjoy the power of JQuery. When used wisely, this is obviously the future. But we always have to be careful to take the right path;

A while ago, I was attending a certain technical event where one of the speakers opened his 'codebase' (read: one 1000 LOC+ giant pile of unmaintainable dirt .js file full of bugs). A shiver went down my spine, but no one in the room flinched. Because the result looked cool on the screen, right?

That's exactly what I'm afraid of: that the fanciness will make people forget about all the best practices and great tools we have, and enforce a 'just hack something together and FTP it to the internetz' mentality...

Also, the old saying about hammers and nails applies: JS is just one of the tools in your toolbox, don't overdo it!

Re: http://bramdemoor.tumblr.com/post/6941291567

This is just a simple test for disqus comments.

Re: Keeping Things Interesting (Or: Avoiding .NET At Home)

Knockout.JS FTW! This makes the maintenance work more bearable. It keeps you motivated. And if you've been working on the brand new super-codebase for a while, it's always great to get a reality check or motivation boost by working with crap code.
In any case, the trick with maintenance work is indeed to find a way to make it work, to slowly improve the codebase and to learn. Just grinding it out is always a bad idea.

Re: The Worst Code I Ever Wrote, And Why I’m Still Happy About It

I think I still have the code of my first large VB program around somewhere. I was grinding out the most horrible if-statements, while my accomplice Dries was copy-pasting large chunks of code until the thing worked.
When we were done, I thought "hmmmm... There must be a better way...". I imagined loops and arrays in my mind, even though I didn't know things like that existed. But it inspired me to learn...
The program itself was some kind of electronic switchboard application, with its entire codebase in one file called Form1.vb. I was 14 years old back then :)

Re: And… That’s All Folks

Damn :( This is by far one of my favorite blogs, usually the first one I read when I check my rss reader. This is also one of the few blogs that I sometimes comment on, and it even inspired me to start my own blog. But I understand how much time and effort it often takes to continuously write good posts. If it feels like a chore, it's not worth your time anymore.

Through the years, I found that, next to the solid technical content, the critical opinions and rants were what really made this blog stand out. You formulated some strong opinions which many other bloggers wouldn't dare to voice. That's an achievement in its own right :)

Finally, wouldn't it be okay to just blog more passively? Just leave the content online and do a post every once in a while, when you feel like it. If I remember correctly, either Atwood or Spolsky started to do exactly the same thing a while ago. Anyway, I'm certain that in a couple of months, some of your opinions would have to find a way out. And you can't fit everything into 140 characters...
