I do believe we are evolving as a "soccer nation" slowly though. Our overall program and style of play is much better. I personally think this particular version of the national team has holes (particularly defensively), but is much more talented than past teams when it comes to the entire squad. I'm a little pessimistic/nervous about our chances due to these deficiencies....but this SHOULD be a manageable group with England, Slovenia and Algeria. Ah well, enough sullying of this golf blog with the soccer talk!

Re: Maybe Allenby Pulled an AK and Was Hitting It Hard Last Night

I don't think it was the fried chicken or the collard greens that got him sick, I definitely think it was the "or whatever the hell they serve."

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

I thought you said you don't watch the sport!!?!?? Just kidding. Nobody said it is constant running, but many studies have been done about the physical exertion needed to play at a high level. Many of these matches will be played at high altitude as well. If anything the tournament is almost too short. Ask any member of any team that makes it to the final if they think the tournament is too long. I think you will be surprised by the answer. 7 games in less than a month is right on the edge.

These guys are all coming off club seasons which ended less than a month ago in which they played 55+ matches. Training for their next season will start within 2 weeks of the final. Many of these players have massive contracts and their club managers literally pull their hair out watching these games hoping their players don't get hurt for their country. If you were to tell them that the World Cup was being condensed they would absolutely lose it.

There are 5 absolute world stars that are out of the cup through injury and 4 out of the 5 play in England, widely considered to be the most brutal on the body (more games played at a faster pace with a more physical style). If anything the trend will be to extend the amount of times that these tournaments are played to ease up on the strain. I hope you catch a few matches, you might not hate what you see (though I would suggest watching on low volume due to the uber-annoying vuvuzela's that will sound like swarming bees).

Re: John Daly in a Legal Rib Cage Match

exactly smol. i was actually at the honda that day (not following daly as many of you can guess by my past comments), so i have followed this story from the beginning. it has always been about the clicking camera distracting him mid swing causing an injury. then it gets to the lawyers and this lady all of a sudden jumped in front of him. seems pretty typical.

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

From what I heard Mr. Green is the only guy that fits in this category. Last year there were 6 guys that had a chance, including Brian Gay who pulled it off.

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

Playing 7 matches over the time of the world cup is rather grueling. Players don't need a week to prepare/recover like the NFL, but playing games every 2nd or 3rd day would lead to a terrible tournament. I'll use the USA as a hypothetical (I don't think we have a chance to win it all, but I can dream). We play Saturday the 12th, Friday the 18th , Wednesday the 23rd in the group stage. That is three matches in 12 days....which is pretty much on the edge of what can be expected for players to be at top level.

After that we could hypothetically play Saturday the 26th (which would be the quickest turnaround for our guys), Friday the 2nd, Tuesday the 6th, and the final on Sunday the 11th. That actually works out to be a tremendous amount of soccer in a month. Thankfully this tournament is being played in the winter, so the weather shouldn't wear down the players too much. By the end of the World Cup here in 1994 the teams were flat out gassed and the final was a terrible spectacle as a result. Two fabulous teams played a terrible match in 100 degree weather after a relatively overheated tournament.

Not only would it be logistically possible to cram the tournament in during a shorter period (especially in a country as large as South Africa), but it would lead to a terrible product on the field due to injuries and fatigue.

Re: John Daly in a Legal Rib Cage Match

This guy is the ultimate low life. He just does not understand life. When he was threatening to sue the event he had the gall to ask them for a sponsor's exemption for the next year. It absolutely boggles my mind that people still support this guy. I don't wish him any ill will, but I wish I had $100 million that I could pay him just so that he would go away forever.

Re: Balls in the Air: St. Jude Classic

Since there isn't a golf tournament going on this week I will give my World Cup predictions. I have South Africa and Mexico playing to a 1-1 draw. I think Mexico is the better team, but the South African crowd will inspire Bafana Bafana to a draw in this match. In the second game I have Uruguay beating France 2-1. The French are a mess with a lack of leadership on the field (their captain is a role player now) and a lame duck coach that doesn't have the respect of anyone in the team. They also have looked terrible in their warm up matches.

Oh wait, what is this thing going on in Memphis?!?!

Re: Khan Comes Out Smelling Like a Rose

Green will accept the spot in a heartbeat. He won't win this week, but it isn't like he skipped the US Open to catch one Australia match in the World Cup. He was playing like crap and didn't want to go through the grind of the qualifier to play in a tournament that doesn't set up well for his game. He would never turn down a direct pass in to a major. If he was taking the whole month off to watch the World Cup I'd question whether he would play or not.....but that was just a flip line at the end of his statement about not going through the qualifier.

The only game that Australia plays during the US Open is at 7:30am pacific time on Saturday. With an 8pm local time finish for TV that day in the Open he would be able to watch almost the entire match unless he was in one of the first groups off the tee.

The guy is playing the other events that clash with the World Cup so it is clear his intention was that he wasn't going to beat his head against the wall and he could at least watch soccer to pass the time.

All that being said, he has no chance of winning in Memphis given the state of his game and his mind.

Re: US Open Sectional Cut List

Is it really the one players most want to win? I would say almost every international player would list the Open Championship or the Masters as their number 1. I think with Americans you would get a pretty even split between Masters and US Open. The way the world of golf is today, that math would work out to less than 25% of all "big time" players in the world of golf ranking that number 1 on their list.

Re: Nathan Green’s Priorities: World Cup Beats Out US Open

Yeah, I agree that the USGA has become more reasonable after the Shinnecock in 04 DEBACLE. But, Nathan Green isn't an American so I don't hold it against him that he has no interest in playing. Aussies (and others around the world) have always thought of the Open Championship as their big tournament, with the Masters a close second. It is just like plenty of Americans that would rarely ever play in the British Open even if they were fully exempt (like Bruce Lietzke and Scott Hoch). I can't ride a guy who is playing poorly for not slogging through 36 holes to play in an event that he doesn't enjoy....when players from my country have turned down invites to the British all the time

Re: Nathan Green’s Priorities: World Cup Beats Out US Open

The Golfweek article made it seem like he was very frustrated with his own game (he shot 76 on Sunday I believe) and isn't a fan of US Open set ups in general. I think it was more of a---my game sucks and at least the soccer will be on---type of thing. I really don't think he is skipping the US Open because Australia happened to qualify for the World Cup. He doesn't like the US Open set ups and they are especially brutal when his game isn't sharp.

Re: Nathan Green’s Priorities: World Cup Beats Out US Open

Good for him, let him do what he wants. If the World Cup match times clashed with the US Open I certainly wouldn't be paying any attention to what is going on at Pebble. The World Cup happens once every four years, Mr. Green can attempt to play in 4 majors every year. The USGA doesn't have to apologize for its set ups, but they also shouldn't get bent out of shape if a certain percentage of tour players don't even want to bother attempting to play said set ups.

Nathan Green hates everything anyway, so nobody should be overly surprised by his decision.

Re: The Orange Fowler Falters

I'm all for guys trying to stand out (like Poulter), but Rickie's outfits are clownish at best. It isn't interesting when you wear the same outfit all the time. We know during the week he will spend at least one day dressed like a smurf, another day in a puke teal ensemble and the garish Orange will be out in full force on Sunday if he makes the cut.

This kid has tons of game, but has flinched so far in contention in professional events (he basically handed Lamely the victory on the Nationwide last year). I like Rickie, I just hope we (as American golf fans) don't put too much hype and/or pressure on the kid. He is not the savior of golf, he is just a very good player who dresses very very very poorly. I really hope that Captain Pavin refrains from jumping the gun and putting Rickie under the intense spotlight of the Ryder Cup unless he earns his way on points. I think there is a very good chance that Rickie will overcome his poor finishing history and grab a win before the team is selected anyway, but let's not put him in a position to fail if he has yet to close the deal on a Sunday.

I've watched Rickie in person and think he is great to watch because of his shot making ability and his pace of play. Once he gets the hang of things I believe he will be a very consistent player. I just think in the aftermath of the Tiger mess many people are looking for someone to pin their hopes on. Rickie isn't even qualifying for majors consistently yet and CBS was fawning all over him.

Re: Jim Nantz Channels Bette Midler

Maybe Ms. Midler threatened to sue for his butchering of the song!

Re: Jim Nantz Channels Bette Midler

It appears that the Jim Nantz/PGA Tour gestapo has gotten to our favorite blogger and taken down this disgustingly schmaltzy video. If it was something about Charity that thing would still be up in all its glory though, right!?!?! PGA Tour where everything is PERFECT (or else!)

Technical difficulties, my ass!

Re: Jim Nantz Channels Bette Midler

Yeah, they were harping on the "young guns" angle all weekend due to Rickie. When Rose took control they tried the "HEY, he's still only 29....these winners in their 20's just keep coming" route which was hilarious. Rose is about the oldest 29 year old in professional golf, with a dozen years as a high profile professional under his belt. He has also been through the depths and back. Justin Rose is many things, but a "young gun" he is not. It was a case of them being technically right while missing the entire point.

Re: Jim Nantz Channels Bette Midler

I couldn't agree more. Nantz has gotten more and more insufferable each year. I've listened to him give radio interviews and he is infatuated with these corny lines to cap off a win. I'd imagine Justin will seek out a copy of the telecast at some point being that it is his first win, I hope listening to that doesn't make him vomit.

Re: Hey, Anyone Wanna Go Bang in a Church Parking Lot?

As a lifelong die hard Mets fan, Straw and Doc were my absolute heros. They each came up in a time when the Mets meant the absolute world to me (not many other worries around the age of 6 and 7). It was so exhilarating to watch them as a little kid who tried to emulate their play on the field every day. As I got older and it became clear that they were both very flawed individuals it just got sadder and sadder. I think you are right in that Straw seems to have turned things around better than Doc. Everyone says that Gooden is a really nice man, he just can't seem to get himself cleaned up.

In the last few years I had the pleasure to see Strawberry at the golf course in which I worked a few times. He was always very nice and appreciative that we would allow him to play (on slow days at a private club). He came across as very humble and respectful. I also know that he has done very good work helping fellow alcoholics in the Fla and NY area. A friend of mine's father is very active in the "home" that allowed him and Strawberry in their recovery. When my friend went to help his dad move one day he was shocked to see that Darryl was there lifting all the heavy stuff into the truck. He said that he was more than happy to help a friend. It was great to hear that he seems to FINALLY have his head on straight. I wish him all the best. One of the sweetest baseball swings of my lifetime (unfortunately for him his golf swing isn't as majestic).

Anyway, enough of my story..........I just think that Tiger should be honored to have a man like D.S. as a fan!

Re: Hey, Anyone Wanna Go Bang in a Church Parking Lot?

I disagree that he moves like he has a palsy. He seemed to be moving just fine every time that I saw him. He also seemed all there mentally. He is probably lucky with all the stuff he did in his youth....but he didn't appear to be a "wet brain" at all. My friend that I mention in my reply to Ducks also was impressed with his strength when moving everything! I really think Darryl has come out of his problems with a chance to have a nice rest of his life.

Re: Hey, Anyone Wanna Go Bang in a Church Parking Lot?

Message is above, sorry for the double post

Re: Grooves Grave Consequences

"I mean, there are serial numbers and lists, but who thinks of doing that?"

i think any serious competitor thinks of making sure that their equipment is conforming, especially their wedges this year. it isn't like this girl was a local nobody who decided to try and make it and shot the rounds of her life. this girl is excellent and has competed in huge events over the last few years. if it is true that she bought wedges that she thought were conforming it is unfortunate, but i have a feeling they are just helping her save a little face. i don't think she was blatantly trying to cheat.... but i have a hard time believing she went in to a store, asked if the clubs were conforming and bought them because she was told they were. i think she just made a boneheaded move and they wanted to help a young girl look less boneheaded.

Re: Tiger Woods and…CURLING!

I just wanted to reply to my own post so that I could write again, again.

Re: Haney to Golf Channel: Tiger Is a Sex Addict, Not PED-User

Not saying Tiger is on PED's, but why would anyone tell their coach if they were on the juice?
