Yeah, China, I did read the story right. There is no way around it. Latino own that city now. Heck, I got flagged by gputnam for "inappropiate comments". I didn't swear, didn't threaten anyone, just spoke the words constantly tossed at me by so many who once lived in Lawrence, that's all. A bit angry? Absolutely. No one will ever convince me otherwise what has happened in the city of Lawrence. I grew up there in the 70's, I know what it was before this influx. Even then we were told to be quiet. Anyone remember the bumper sticker "Will the last American out grab the flag", etc. I remain disgusted whenever I travel through. I dare gputnam or anyone else to "flag" me then.

For your info, teegeezfun. The projects like the
Beacon-where I grew up, Essex, Stadium where there loooon
before Mayor Buckley. Matter of fact. The real influx started
really heavy around 71. They came in took over Park St.,
Essex St. projects, mainly the Tarbox area. Nobody cared.
All just cared they come in and keep their areas clean and have some pride. But those in the beginning were arrogant,
had enormous chips on their shoulders, refused to
assimilate in any way at all and began to literally tear
my beloved city apart. Remember the fires? Go look down
Park St. at all the empty lots and stuff. There used to be homes
there!!! THAT"s why the anger by so many today. That and
the question of language. Most know English but refuse to speak it. Why? Try this attitude in France see what happenes. If someone could please explain to me why someone who has lived here for more than 26 years and needs a translator still,
then I think folks will lighten up. Get it? Got it!

Bigoted, mean-spirited? You girl, out your mind!!!! Selfish to boot!!!! If I'd like to see Lawrence stand up for itself and its citizens to stop taking all they can from anyone willing to help and there have been many of us, while still maintaining that arrogant, "I deserve everything free" attitude by so many, not all.
If that is being selfish, than guilty as charged! If driving around my city and seeing all the trash in the streets, the boarded-up buildings, the empty lots that I know what used to be there, just the sense of filth everywhere, if wishing that had changed makes me mean-spirited, then so be it, guilty as charged!!
If ninety per cent of the crimes against children, the elderly, and not to mention all that insurance fraud a few years ago tends to connect with the same "ethnic" last names, etc, then if that makes me a bigot, then guilty as charged!!!
As for me? I grew up and graduated from LHS, class of 72, initials are DL. If I thought standing on a street corner would turnthings around for my beloved city I would. But we know it won't. Why? As back then "don't say anything, keep it to yourself"
remember that? How's that working for everyone?

Thanks be to you, Brock. I have been sitting here reading these comments and am amazed at the lack of grammar skills and the awful spelling out here. Where did they all go to school?
Proves my point though. Soooo much money wasted in the school systems for what, for an awful lot of illiterates in the Valley, that's for certain... Me? I graduated from Lawrence High long time ago and remain proud of being the only one in my family. Hurts to see so many adults have so much difficulty with such simple words.

BRATS!!!!!! All brats. I raised 4 children and numerous foster-children and none of them would have ever even entertained such a thought, EVER!!!!!!! Why, you ask? Because we read to them, we talked to them, we sat around the table at dinner time laughed and enjoyed each other's company. We had no money. Even today, my 30 yr old will not swear in front of me or his mother. Why, you ask? Out of respect, he says to us. See, we never considered any of our kids a bonus add-on to the next welfare check we were getting, 'cuz WE NEVER GOT ONE!!!!! We worked, did what we had to do. Taught our kids values, morals, etc. I see these BRATS today and shake my head. IT IS THE PARENTS FAULT FOR NOT BEING THERE!!!! So many people have had children that never deserved any. Thank God I am now on the other side of 50. With this next generation coming up, God help us!!!!

As for structure and the fear thing, I totally agree. Way too many parents today actually say their little darlings are there best friends in the whole wide world. Can you imagine. I grew up in that city and when I go through today it actually disgusts me. It is so dirty, cluttered, loud and actually obnoxious-just like its residents! I wonder why? If an entire city seems to be filled with one ethnic group or another and that group has systematically destroyed said city, and remarks are made to the same, why is that always racist? Is it not racist when I walk into a grocery store and see everything printed in Spanish including that telephone thing?

You said you went to LHS, when, you never said you graduated-big difference. I know, I know, you said you have a college degree. By the way, I grew up in the Beacon projects and lived on Alder and Andover St. by the tracks. My mother was a pig, this is true, she was dirty and lived on welfare but her sons and daughters vowed to make something better of themselves and spite of being poor and other things, we all did. One more response. I totally agree with Commentard and for those of you who still live there I feel bad for you because I know it's not you seeme or the others who try so hard to make things right. I regret leaving when mine were young but I saw it coming and didn't want them to live like that, but fight for Lawrence, absolutely!! I am more than willing to show my face and fight for my beloved city, and that is why I care so much.
I have fond memories of Lawrence, saw and see its potential and watch as Sullivan and others attempt to clean things up and bring in more industry. Things are changing yes, but you know, go up Broadway, up Park St. down Lawrence St. behind the high school, it is absolutely disgusting and anybody and everybody who has any pride in themselves or thier city she scream loud enough until heard. I'm with ya, just call out.

I did not matter in mine, class of 72, either. But, but, back then Lawrence was a whole lot different than today you have got to admit.
Maybe it is about the Latinos. Maybe it is about their attitude. Some, not all of course. Seems to me since the early days of the 80's when they took over Park St. and burned most of that to the ground folks like me who grew up just as poor as them, in the projects, struggling to survive didn't go around creating the areas of total disgust like they have. Make sense?
In other words I grew up in the Beacon and no one there had such an attitude of entitlement that I had ever seen as these people did when they first came to Lawrence-late 70's, etc.
I know there are good Latinos somewhere, I just never knew many instead I silently watched them move into our city, destroy it while they stuck their hands out and said "gimme"

Alders St, directly across from the Tarbox, only it has been burnt down. Andover St. two tenaments next to the tracks (on the left) right after you cross over Broadway.
As for the "they" comment. Yes, it is about a certain group of folks who came here with a sense of entitlement that I still have not gotten over. I saw it, heard it, lived it until I decided my kids were not going to go through all of that. I tried to change things but was told to keep quiet, don't hurt their feelings. Look where that got us, huh?
