If you're Zach Brown - you need traditional retail to be on board because fans are still discovering you.

Re: Coolfer Report: The State of the Compact Disc

Kudos on this effort Glenn.

A few points to add just looking at the executive summary:
1. Don't ignore (for the moment) Barnes & Noble in terms of deep catalog sales and selection. Not all of their stores have large music departments, but at all of their stores thay have the capability of ordering CDs for customers via their one-stop - Alliance.
2. Consumers are frustrated at the paucity of available CD titles in comparison to the massive back catalogs the labels - especially the majors - own. Custom reissue labels like Mosaic, American Beat and Collectibles have seen the collectors' market as one to be properly mined. The majors have just given up on that front. How is it possible that the majors can't print up out-of-print albums on demand, especially for those titles once in print on CD?
3. No one has properly pointed out how many hundreds of millions of devices in circulation that CDs play on - and that consumers aren't exactly giving these devices up. The number of iPods in the marketplace PALES in comparison to the number of devices CDs can play on.
